How the Mac App Store works, and get Twitter for Mac free

Mac App Store in OS X Dock

The new Mac App Store is online, and ready for you to use. It's an incredibly simple way to find, install, and manage your favorite software.

First of all, to see the Mac App Store at all, you'll need to run your Software Updates (under the Apple menu) and get Mac OS X 10.6.6 System Update, or run the combo update you can download here.

After you reboot, you'll see a new icon in your dock, right after the Finder icon. Click that to launch the app store. If you don't want it taking up dock space, you can also get to the Mac App Store through the Apple menu, right under Software Update.

The app store looks and works almost exactly like the iPad App Store, featuring the same home page of new and popular apps. Most apps cost less than you may have seen them at retail, but some, like Things, are priced higher than we've seen them in bundles.

In the Gallery accompanying this post, you can walk through getting the much-anticipated Twitter for Mac app. The release was teased yesterday and showed up on time early this morning. As expected, the app is free. Its predecessor -- known as Tweetie before its developer was acquired by Twitter -- hadn't been updated in quite a while, so folks looking for Tweetie 2 will want to check this out.

Check out all of the steps to installation in the gallery below. We'll have an in-depth review of Twitter for Mac up soon. Enjoy!

Ok, serious concern. I downloaded Twitter fromt he app store. Great. I have the same user ID on my other computer in the house. Since I installed Twitter on the machine in my office, I am not able to redownload it on the house machine! It shows 'installed' in the app store with no way to download. Steve Jobs specifically said "one purchase, works on all your personal Macs" ... what gives??? (Note: yes I checked the 'purchases' tab and there's not option to re-download there, either.)

TUAW writers have been able to purchase on one Mac, and then download again from the app store on another Mac.

Make sure there isn't already a Twitter app on the second computer. Try restarting the Mac App Store on the second computer to check again. Failing those, try just copying the app over. It should ask for your Apple ID, and you'd supply the same one.

App Store app won't let me log in (when I eventually found the login window lurking behind the main app window!). Buttons work but can't enter anything in the Apple ID nor Password boxes.

Sign-in problem and hidden sign-in window caused by haxie FruitMenu.ape
Removing it to Application Enhancers (Disabled) folder cures the problem. Hoping Unsanity can fix this issue.

Hang on what about paid apps I have that are now in the store - do I have to install them from there? Why does the store not see them on my Mac already? Will I continue to receive free updates for old apps? And why is there no working support on the Apple pages?

Good going TUAW, I realize you prefer speed over accuracy in your reporting.

You linked to the SERVER update instead of the regular update.

I think I'll get my news somewhere else from now on, as I prefer accuracy over speed....

When you find a web site that never makes incidental errors, be sure to let us all know!

Thanks. That was noted by earlier readers and the links were fixed a while before you posted your comment. Sorry for any trouble.

have I been living under a rock, or is the fact that the ilife/iwork apps are no longer bundled something new?

yes...let me explain

a lot of users don't have the new versions of iWork or iLife and don't need all of the suite...so you can get just Pages if you don't need the others at a reduced price

all new macs still come with iLife but if you have an older mac that has the previous version of iLife then you have the option of just buying the programs that you actually use instead of being forced to pay the bundled price for all of them...some people don't use iMovie, etc...so this gives them the ability to buy the newer version and not have to buy them all

and you can still buy the disk in the stores but this way is cheaper even if you want the whole suite because you don't have to buy the family pack to install on more than one mac

any word on purchases being allowed on multiple computers with the same itunes account? I would hope this works just like iphone/ipad apps. One purchase can be transferred to multiple devices within the same account.

Yes, purchases are allowed to work on multiple computers using the same Apple ID account.

yeah you can install the software you purchase on all of your personal Macs

there is a link that will show you your purchased software and if it is installed on the mac you are using

pretty cool thing...sure that will bother devs that like to charge you per mac

but it's a great thing for us

anyone else try to purchase an app, and it just sits in your dock with a blank progress bar? Mouse over and it says "waiting"...?
