iWork '11 hinted at on Apple web page, then disappears

Several TUAW readers and our very own Mike Schramm pointed out something interesting today: on Apple's web page about the Mac app store, one of the screenshots shows a link for the iWork '11 apps.

iWork '11? The suite made up of Pages, Numbers and Keynote that didn't make it into the Mac App Store on opening day? Yeah, that iWork '11.

Earlier today we were all looking at this page, which showed a store screen with a link to iWork '11:

If you happen to go to the same page now, you'll notice it's a bit different:

It could mean nothing, or it could be that the suite was pulled from the App Store at the last minute, resulting in some poor web designer getting screamed at by Steve Jobs for not removing the characters "'11" from a rather insignificant web page.

Time will tell. Any bets on when iWork '11 will finally drop?

With Apple, "apparent imminence" means precious little. Maybe they'll hold off for an 11.11.11 release to be especially clever.

Apple already segregates apps that were purchased through the app store from those traditionally installed, so they have a record of who purchased iWork '09 that way. I would suspect that it would actually be a free update, but *only* for those that purchased iWork 09 through the app store. My guess is that, since '11 is apparently imminent, users who purchased '09 through the app store will be grandfathered into '11.

Well I for one think the app store will be a failure, for 2 reasons. 1.it's separate from iTunes 2.it's not connected to steam, so the game department is stunted.

iWork '09 is 24 months old. Keynote on the iPad is terribly crippled. Still no real Keynote player for sharing presos with users who don't have iWork. (Interactive QT is all good fun, but won't display presenter notes on a second monitor.)

The absence of iWork '11 in the App Store coupled with the presence of iWork '09 is disconcerting. Speculators were confident '11 would show up with the App Store. Time to push release speculation back to Lion? That way, we can get another lovely all-in-one package (iLife+iWork+OS X).

Anyone know what happened to iWeb? No mention and if you search the store for 'iweb', nothing is returned.

Maybe they figure that since it wasn't update in '11, everyone already has the '09 version, so why sell the '09 version on the App Store?

I guess if they update iWeb in the next version of iLife, it will be on the App Store then. You'll notice that only the iLife '11 updates are available there now.

My guess is, that Apple was afraid their severs would bend down if everyone was starting to download the update AND parts of the new iWork Suite. I'm sure it'll be released as soon as the first big storm towards the OSX update is over.

It was the very first thing I looked for when launching the App Store this morning. Shame :(
