Mac App Store now online, Mac OS 10.6.6 available

As announced, Mac OS 10.6.6 was made available early today, which includes the Mac App Store. You'll find a link to the Store in your Dock once you update.

Grab the OS update now by running Software Update on your Mac. According to Apple, this update lets you:

"Discover Mac apps: Browse featured apps, top charts, and categories, or search for something specific. Read detailed app descriptions and user reviews, and flip through screen shots.

Buy and install: Easily purchase apps with your iTunes account. Apps install in one step and are quickly available from the Dock.

App updates: The Mac App Store keeps track of all your purchased apps and notifies you when free updates are available."

Thus begins our Mac App Store coverage. Stay tuned to TUAW all day for in-depth analysis and exploration.

I'm amazed that TUAW has already posted 11 articles about the Mac App Store today and not a one of them is as informative, concise and interesting as this one:

Why do I need to update my (running well) operating system just to get a new application?

If you, like me, don't see the update in Software Update, here is a direct download link:

So how does the DRM work with these apps?

I can't be the only one that is curious. There are some apps that I buy and load onto both mine and my girlfriends MacBooks. Sure, they may only be "single licenses" but we're all guilty of doing that.

Assuming I buy, lets say, Things on the Mac App Store, I'll need to use my Apple ID to launch the application, or add my computer to a list of "confirmed systems". If I add my ID to her compute as well, that would count a second "hit".

Until I play with it some more, I still feel some applications are best left to serial keys for personal use. I feel this store will be awesome for apps that are Free - $10.

If the developer so chooses, they can have apps check for the GUID of the Mac the app was downloaded on and require an authorization if it fails.

Sounds like it could be defeated with a patch, though.

Check out the receipt in the app bundle for an app you purchase - it's in Contents/_MASReceipt

I dont understand why apple wouldnt offer apps that have been purchased on iOS devices free on mac. Why buy them more than once? Unless they are trying to say that iPad isnt a viable platform and not on par with other platforms which seems contradictory based on their normal stance.

That doesn't make any sense at all, they're completely different applications with different features, functions, and development. You cannot install the iOS version of an app on OS X or vice versa, so why would you expect to get the alternate OS's version for free when you've paid for just one of them?

You can't rate an app even if it says you have it installed, but not 'purchased' it thought the app store.

Great, I excitedly downloaded Keynote, seeing it was released on Jan 3rd, 2011 according to the Mac App store.

I fire it up, and it is still the old Keynote '09. I just paid $19.99 to download what I already had installed and paid $37 for.

Beware, the iWork suite is NOT updated.
