Pixelmator now $30, available exclusively on Mac App Store

Pixelmator is an image-editing app for Mac that has a lot of fans. For just US$59, it performs many of the tasks that can also be done with the much more expensive Adobe Photoshop. The developers, Saulius and Aidas Dailide, have announced that Pixelmator will now be available exclusively through the Mac App Store. The price tag for Pixelmator has dropped as well; for a limited time, you can purchase the app for $29.99, making it even more of a bargain.

So why did the developers decide to move Pixelmator to the Mac App Store? In a blog posting on the Pixelmator site, they cite the following reasons (quoted from the post):

  • The Mac App Store is the future of Pixelmator (and probably of all other great Mac apps, too) sales and distribution.
  • Thanks to the Mac App Store, installation of your favorite image editor becomes easier than ever.
  • Because we are always improving Pixelmator, you will rest assured that your Pixelmator is always up-to-date with the latest improvements and features within the Mac App Store.
  • With the Mac App Store, you can easily re-download Pixelmator anytime you wish. This is especially useful when you get a new Mac.
  • With the Mac App Store, the headaches of dealing with all those serial numbers and anti-piracy system stuff are gone forever.

Peter Cohen at The Loop interviewed Saulius Dailide, and the interview reveals insights into the price change -- it's basically a way for existing users of the app to transition to the new Mac App Store purchase and upgrade infrastructure without being penalized. By purchasing the app at the lower price point now, buyers receive a free upgrade to the upcoming Pixelmator 2.0.

Several of the TUAW staffers have made Pixelmator their first Mac App Store purchase, and during the transition period it's certainly a good deal for a great piece of software.

I have to say this is what I feared with the App store and it does annoy me.

Why should I pay all that money for a program I already own just to remain future proof?

It's little more than exploitation of the consumer.

Hi Keith,

you will keep up to date with what you bought (all updates for version 1.x) will still be available via their webpage.

You will only have to buy the software at the App Store if you want to get version 2.x -- which is a paid, big upgrade anyway. You could basically wait until they realease verison 2.x and buy it then. If you like it or stay with and keep version 1.x which you already have paid for.

So, essentially, they are going to be App Store exclusive only for new customers and buyers of version 2.x -- I think it's pretty fair to announce it that early and give the folks who already know that they're gonna update the chance to do it at a lower price (App Store doesn't support update pricing so far and version 2.x will presumably cost 60 Dollar when it comes out).

Yesterday, when talking about Remote Desktop, TUAW reported on the legal terms of use for Mac App Store apps, and the language seemed to imply apps could only be used for "personal, noncommercial use".

Doesn't this restriction make moving exclusively to the App Store (especially for professional-use productivity apps like Pixelmator) a bad idea? You cannot use the software legally in any professional capacity.

(Or am I reading the terms wrong?)

Well, I really like this Program, but I do have a few questions:

- How long will the "limited time" (mentioned in the blog post) last?
- Why should I pay Pixelmator twice in order to get a "totally awesome Pixelmator 2.0" – about which absolutely nothing is known?
- Why do the makers of Pixelmator think that the "so many benefits" for me as a customer are worth $29?
- Why do they guarantee to "provide free Pixelmator 1.X updates" if this is apparently not the case? (Pixelmator on the Mac App Store is version 1.6.4, which is not available for me.)

I hope there will be good enough answers for me to keep liking this app...

Well put.

I purchased this program to support the guys even though i'm mainly using photoshop hoping to see regular updates that expand the feature set but after a year has gone by I haven't really seen any big movement.

Now they are asking $30 without a preview or roadmap on where they are going. Very disappointed here but I will shell out $30 or even $60 if they make 2.0 decent since I do want to support these guys and reward them.

- They will give warning on their website/blog before the limited time offer ends, but it definitely isn't planned to be around until the launch of 2.0 later this year.

- You can basically pay $30 to transition to the Mac App Store version of Pixelmator which includes automatic updates, free re-downloading of the app, and an automatic upgrade to 2.0 when it comes out. Or you can do nothing and continue to use the version of Pixelmator you already bought and paid for.

- They guarantee updates for existing customers because they are going to offer all 1.X updates to existing customers. Currently there is a slight version discrepancy between the MAS version and the old retail version as you noted, but that's just due to a focus on getting the MAS version ready for the launch of the store.

All of these answers are based on responses by the developers on the Pixelmator Blog. Feel free to check there first for answers to any other questions you have! I'm a very happy Pixelmator customer who has enough faith in the company to go along with this transition plan and basically pre-purchase 2.0 (yes, sight unseen) for $30 today.
