Happy 10th Birthday, iTunes!

You've come a long way, baby. Back on your birthday on January 9, 2001 at Macworld Expo, you were just a music player and manager -- the Apple-ized offspring of SoundJam MP, given a fresh face. Soon enough, though, you would become the conduit for iPod synchronization, the platform for music and video purchases, and now the landing zone for the iOS App Store.

Not bad for a ten-year-old. Even though we may tease you for your vanities and complain about your sluggish, do-everything approach, we still couldn't do without you. Happy 10th birthday, iTunes!

Commenter Kevlar points to our rundown of the iTunes user interface from 1.0 to 7.0, here, and Twitter buddy MightyKenny points to a YouTube clip of the actual 2001 introduction; it's embedded in the second half of this post.

I remember installing iTunes v1.1 on my 'Key Lime' iBook and being thrilled by the convenience of digital music and the quality of those 160kpbs MP3 files (the default import setting at the time.) Seems like a gazillion years ago.

Personally I think iTunes would be great again if Apple would simply stop piling on features and make it run faster.

For me it's iTunes on
My Mac or a Windows alternative as my main machine. Not going to happen now that I've made the change. iTunes isnt perfect, but there's no alternative to sync the idevices in my house. Bring on wireless syncing & cloud storage then i could become less reliant on iTunes.

Here's hoping they split this thing up and take it back to its core purpose.

A lot of folks diss on iTunes but I have never had any issues with it. And I like the idea of Ping but it needs to open up to all bands. I mean if you can sell your shizz in their store then folks ought to be able to follow your group. Link it with Genius for better recommendations and maybe get the rest of the LaLa tools in there and it could be a worthy item.

Now would I be upset if they pulled the store side out into a separate but linked app. No. Not at all. Nor would I be upset if they recreate the software so that when you put in a cd you get a popup on the desktop asking if you want to play or import into your library. Turn DVD player into a dual playback that would kick in if you said play. If you said import the stuff is copied and then you can go into player, open iMedia manager or just close. When you plug in a device, it appears on the desktop. Click it and the sync screens open right there like a finder window.

But I am also fine the way it is

My favorite app :) Getting iTunes out 9 months before the iPod was announced was genius. This gave us 9 months to accumulate a lot of digital music on our computers so that it would be ready for the iPod's arrival. I remember wondering back then if there was anything else in store since what iTunes lacked back then was a way to transfer music to an MP3 player.

@Mr. Lizard if you knew what you were talking about you could go into System Preferences/Dock and un-tick Animate Opening Applications. imjustsaying.

I really miss the simplicity iTunes first offered. Now being a sync machine, Apple doesn't give audio enthusiasts the resources to really organize and listen to our music. Sad. :(

Yes, the Frankenstein that is iTunes. Now it has a bride known as the Mac App Store. It will be interesting to see what happens from here on out.

And iTunes is still as clunky to use as ever. No matter how many outstanding, clever, simple, and brilliant apps and products Apple comes out with, iTunes still stands out as the one that fails in so many ways: It has features nobody wants (Ping) is missing many features people need (Metadata correction/more powerful album artwork finder), is slow, and looks rather ugly compared to the rest of Apple's apps.

Please Apple, make iTunes better.
