Rumor: Best Buy stores to add more Apple products, get Genius Bars

An anonymous tipster who works at a Best Buy store let us know this morning that he was informed by his Apple rep that the Apple section of the computer department will be going through a transition sometime this spring to allow more products to be displayed. At the same time, the stores will get a Genius Bar, up to this time a fixture only at Apple Stores.

If this is true, this marks the first time that Apple has expanded some of the trademark features of the Apple Stores to other retailers. This, and the earlier report today about a Mac setup section in Apple Stores, seem to mark a renewed commitment to customer service by Apple.

Any one of us working in the BBY stores knows that we are NOT reps if we are working directly for Apple - we're ASC's. The key factor here is that the Apple "Rep" is talking out his rear. While we work directly for Apple, we know as much as most of the world does - nothing until it's announced! If you want the cold hard facts, check out the Apple web site.

I hope not! Best Buy around here has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I can't imagine that being a positive thing for Apple. I would rather drive an hour to the nearest Apple store than drive 10 minutes to our local Best Buy. Geek Squad in a Mac genius shirt... Terrible idea!

"seem to mark a renewed commitment to customer service by Apple."

Really? Cause they have been failing at this recently?

I know. I laughed about this. It isn't like they haven't been constantly making changes to improve their Cs. Unlike Best Buy who still generally sucks, is totally pushy with the add ons and has pretty much dropped their cd and DVD discounts

How about doing this where they currently don't sell Apple computers? Like, oh, Martinsburg, WV. As it is, I have to go to Reston, VA, an hour away, to get to an Apple Store. I'd love to shop locally.

Want to sell more product? Cut the prices...

but keep in mind, Apple isn't about "selling more product", they focus on quality and having high customer satisfaction... so cutting prices would make zero sense.... that's just not a good way to run a business.

I highly doubt this. I was an Apple rep for about a year and I never was updated on anything before the normal Apple announcement. However, I did work for a third party which Apple hired so maybe this rep works directly for Apple. But once again my experience from being a tech rep. leads me to believe this is not the case.

Seems to me that this would require a lot more resources than just a new product announcement would. Hiring and training new staffs would require more lead time than a new iPad deployment would.
