Feral Interactive offers digital downloads on multiple online stores

Here's a cool note I missed last week among the hustle and bustle of CES: Feral Interactive is one of the biggest publishers of Mac games out there, often porting and publishing games from larger PC developers over to the Mac platform. Last week, the company announced that four games it has published (Borderlands, Rome: Total War, LEGO Harry Potter and Bioshock) would be available for sale through three different digital download services (Direct2Drive, GamersGate and the MacGameStore).

That's good news, not only for Mac gamers who want more options to pick from for their games, but for the platform as a whole. Steam has made plenty of headlines, both during the launch and since, but a deal like this shows that there is demand for Mac games even beyond the most popular digital store online. Direct2Drive especially is a fairly large digital store known for PC game sales, and the fact that Feral games are now available on the service is a nice indicator of how popular the Mac platform is becoming among gamers and other users.

So I'm thinking of ordering Borderlands: GOTY from Feral Interactive. Are they safe to order from and has anyone ordered from them before? Thanks.

Unfortunately there would be no way for Feral to make money off of their games if they were SteamPlay. Currently there is no way to distinguish a "mac" purchase from a PC one on Steam. Aspyr says:

"EH: We love Valve and are thrilled their games are finally on the Mac. Valve offers great technology with Steam Works and bringing that technology to the Mac is a benefit to gamers. There are certainly aspects of their technology that all digital publishers can admire.

On the sales side, Valve’s support of the Mac platform via Steam right now is reliant on publishers participating in Steam Play which is Valve’s program of releasing every game “Hybrid” despite who did the development work. Right now there is no compensation for the publisher if their game is downloaded but not purchased. For the publisher this is tough to swallow and I think this is a hindrance to Valve seeing the same market dominance on the Mac as it has on the PC. I believe if Steam even offered a Mac version of an existing PC game for just $5 there would be less of a barrier for Mac publishers to sell content on Steam, the consumers would still get a great gaming experience across two platforms, and a big catalog of great content could find it’s way to Steam."

That's good and all, but at this point it's Steam or nothing for me. Their great policies on cross-platform ownership, re-downloads, and insane sales make them the only digital game store worth paying attention to, for me at least.

While I'm feeling the same way, I'm disappointed to see that Feral has ported some games to Mac, but they aren't available as a Mac game in Steam. A prime example of this would be BioShock. I have to boot into Win 7 to play it every time.
