Mac OS X 10.6.6 introduces subtle changes to Boot Camp
MacNN cites two tips they received noting changes made to Boot Camp in Mac OS X 10.6.6. The first suggests that Apple has dropped support for Windows XP. When setting up a Windows partition, Boot Camp requests an "...authentic installation disc of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate." XP isn't mentioned.
Also, users are discouraged from using software from a Mac OS X install disc or another computer in an attempt to find drivers and the like. Instead, Boot Camp will prompt you to download "additional software designed specifically for each Mac" to get your keyboards, etc. working. Just as MacNN speculates, we agree that this measure is meant to ensure that users have the latest software, helping to eliminate future troubleshooting.

My bootcamp assistant still mentions XP and using the CD to install drivers with - so I don't know if it's just on some macs this change has been affected.
January 18 2011 at 3:50 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAh - I see that some people mention 3.0.4 as the version these changes happened in. I just checked my version, it's 3.0.2 - yet there are no updates available in System Updates.

January 17 2011 at 7:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoes anyone know if this fixes a problem with the laptop's keyboard not working properly in Windows 7? I have Windows 7 32 bit installed on a non-unibody (with LED) mbp and the bluetooth keyboard works but the laptop keyboards key mapping is messed up bad. I have to use it with an external keyboard.
January 17 2011 at 4:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI noticed when trying to start the Boot Camp process on 10.6.6 the message about downloading drivers rather than using the disc, which I thought was an OK idea, until it failed to copy the drivers to the external hard drive that I was using (and it was formatted properly so it wasn't a user error). I spent about 30 minutes dealing with it before just moving along and using the 10.6 disc as usual, which worked perfectly fine. "Ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind.
January 17 2011 at 3:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnd how did you fix it?
February 20 2011 at 6:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyXP is definitely still available as an option on my 27" iMac:

I wouldn't blame them if they did stop supporting XP. It's a 10 year old operating system now and Win7 is clearly superior.
January 17 2011 at 2:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's not false. Perhaps it depends on machine. I wasn't able to install XP on my recent MBA 10.6.6 via BootCamp. Boot camp reported that I had to install Windows 7, not XP.
I also had a Windows 7 upgrade disc and license key, but MS doesn't allow you to install a fresh Windows 7 with an upgrade license key, even if you have a prior (in my case windows XP) full license key.
Cost me $200 to buy a new copy of Windows 7. Begrudged every penny.
Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4 (the version included by 10.6.6) appears to be bugged. According to people on the Apple discussions site, support is indicating that 3.0.4 was supposed to only be for the newer MacBook Air models, and on other systems will fail to download drivers. I've seen it fail on a 2008 Mac Pro, a 2010 MacBook Pro, and a 2009 Mac Mini.
The workaround is to tell it you already have drivers, and to use the Snow Leopard disc as normal. Support has been telling people to look for a proper fix sometime soon.
Odds are, this got slipped in accidentally in the rush to get 10.6.6 out for the App Store.
Does this mean that I will be able to install W7 through Bootcamp and use my Apple bluetooth keyboard/mouse in that OS without jumping through hoops? Anyone?
January 17 2011 at 2:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes. I had a magic mouse and a wireless keyboard set up already with my Mac. I put Windows 7 Professional on two days ago and turned them on and they worked perfectly. All I did was install driver support from the OSX disc and then I used the Apple Software Update to install the latest updates for Boot Camp.
January 17 2011 at 3:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is simply false. I have 10.6.6 installed and I set up Windows XP with Bootcamp on Saturday morning. It still listed Windows XP with Service Pack 2 as one of the versions of Windows it supported.
January 17 2011 at 1:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySame here. Had to rebuild my machine after a drive failed. I never eve noticed the omission of XP in the blurb.. It had no issues installing it. I did notice the ability to burn a drivers disc or copy to USB/Similar.. I guess this just suggests more of a move towards flash install discs.
