Fantastic transparent iPhone 4 case mod
We love a good mod, and this one is stellar. An enterprising iPhone user got his hands on a clear case mod kit for the iPhone 4, (Google translation) put it together and posted the fantastic results online. It's wicked geeky, and reminds us of the clear Newton MessagePad prototype, though not as cloudy. We know what you're thinking: where do I get that kit?! We want one, too, but can't find that information for now. If and when we do, we'll update this post. In the meantime, enjoy the photo gallery.
White iPhone? Pfft. Who needs it. This is way cooler.
Update: Looks like this is a regular iPhone mod with paint thinner applied to remove the paint and make it transparent.

There are a few very clear details that show it is a 3rd party part. Weather or not IT was originally clear or the modder did it himself, I am unsure.
First, the text "iPhone" at the bottom is not the correct font Apple uses, specifically look at the 'e'.
Secondly, around the camera and flash, there is a thick silver bezel. No such bezel is present on Apples back nor inside the phone (there is a smaller silver bezel on the real one, but not nearly like the one depicted).
Finally, there is an FCC ID. The original site states that the iPhone was bought in Asia, which then makes no sence why he would have an American iPhone. 100% of aftermarket backs have the FCC ID and logo.
My best guess would be that he striped the paint off of a knockoff back.
Won't all that stray light coming in from the back reduce the effects
of the LCD backlight, as well as mess with the camera? Apple's been
killing themselves for 6 months trying to get the paint on the white
one to block out all the light. How is this any good?
Got a rough translation from a friend, apparently he bought parts for the phone and "rebuilt" it. But mostly he scraped the paint off of a black kit he bought from some shop in China. Used some chemical at the end.

January 21 2011 at 1:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyEverything is so well packed and shielded there's not that much to see through, not even the backlight LEDs make it look cool.
I think excitement of this mod would last about 5 secs and the front hack is even worse.
Not so sure it's a simple paint removal job -- they did the front too. If you click through, there's 10 photos, including two disassembly pics. Seriously doubt you can use paint thinner on the front glass without damaging the LCD.

Isnt the back of an iPhone 4 painted??? I remember apple saying. They were having trouble with the white iPhone 4s bc of the paint. So wouldn't you just use a paint thinner or paint removal chemical. Just saying...

I say it looks quite good with the Apple logo there....
