Universal iPhone bumper from Apple sneaks into Apple Store
In advance of the Verizon iPhone, it seems Apple realizes the old bumper won't fit. So they quietly stocked Apple Stores with a new, universal bumper where the hole for the mute switch has been enlarged just enough to accommodate both versions of the iPhone 4. Nice! We were wondering when this would happen, and it's a bit in advance of the Verizon iPhone actually being available. Let us know if you spot them in your neck of the woods.
Thanks for the video and tip, Alex!

A "universal" iPhone bumper? Great, I'll pick one up for my 3GS!
January 21 2011 at 11:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just picked up the orange bumper and the softer plastic seems less grippy than my old bumper. I used to be able to put it up on my dashboard while driving, now it just slides off. Anyone else notice this?
January 21 2011 at 8:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyQuick question. Does the bumper keep the iPhone off the surface? In other words, if I have the phone on my desk (with a bumper) will the screen or back be off the surface?

I like the fact that they increased the dock cutout. This was one reason I like the knock-off bumpers better than the real ones.
Yeah, that looks good. Will fit my car connector from the looks of it.
January 21 2011 at 8:14 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNews to me.. what's the reason to change the size of mute switch and position of volume buttons??
January 21 2011 at 6:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis video is proof that the volume buttons on the Verizon iPhone did move down.
I took this snapshot from your video, rotated it for square in Photoshop and added guidelines.

Same thing shown here too.

There's a subtle but insanely important (for me) difference between these cases. It's mentioned that the dock connector is the same. Alignment-wise, that's correct, but if you pause the video at 1:25, you'll see that Apple realized that not everybody is going to use the new, slimmer 30-pin cable. There's a huge cutout at the dock connector now that appears like it will support many more third-party and even older Apple iPhone/iPod cables. Hooray!
January 21 2011 at 12:57 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHell, I might just pick this up, I have an old dock connector wired up to my car audio system and I hate having to take my bumper off all the time
January 21 2011 at 12:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGood eye spotting the tiny difference, but holy he'll that video is terrible. Maybe take a moment to think about what you're going to say before you hit record next time?
