Netflix: Apple TV users are surpassing iPad users

Netflix released its quarterly earnings on Wednesday, and a note in the document indicated that, in just four months, the number of Netflix users streaming content through the Apple TV has surpassed those streaming through the iPad. The company doesn't speculate on why, but it's most likely because iPad users are liable to be doing something other than watching Netflix on the devices, but it also helps that more than a million of the new Apple TVs have been sold.

Netflix also said that the iPhone app has grown popular as well, but more people are using Netflix by far through laptops (both Windows and Mac), the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.

I have both, and the ATV sees exponentially more use. The biggest problem isn't the difference in screen size or app availability, but rather the implementation of Netflix on each device.

The ATV interface is clean cut, stable, and easy to use. The iPad app is, in comparison, a very unstable, slow, and confused product. It crashes out often, and tends to downsample videos to the point where they are nearly unwatchable, despite a 5+ Mbps down average internet connection that streams Netflix video at near 720p on the ATV. If Netflix wants to see more usage on the iPad, they need to greatly improve their app; as it currently stands it is usable, but only just.

I would rather watch Netflix on the Wii than my iPad.

Really?

Nobody else is going to mention that the Netflix iPad app is a usability nightmare?

All we use our Apple TV for is Netflix. My wife and I had our own Goldie Hawn film festival over Christmas.

I wonder how the Apple TV/iPad usage compares to iPhone usage?

This may not be the forum for questions, but can 2 people in the same house be using a single netflix account at the same time to watch 2 different shows (i.e. one show on the ipad, and another show on the TV through Apple TV)?

Since I received an AppleTV for Christmas (thanks Sis!) I've been using it as my primary Netflix streaming device whereas before i'd use my iPad. Now I can free up my iPad while still streaming Netflix (plus the Remote app's a joy to use on the iPad in conjunction with ATV). It's usually when I head off to bed that the iPad reverts back to my streaming device.

I bought an Apple TV earlier this month. It's great, and we love it.

I just with Netflix had more current movies. But I understand that the studios prefer a pay-per-view model instead of streaming. The Apple TV is still a good deal though.

Netflix on an iPad just isn't very useful. After showing off to all your friends how cool it is that your new iPad can stream netflix, do you really use it much? I know I haven't. It's a cool novelty, but I'll take a TV any day.

Now, if there were a way to easily cache Netflix movies for offline viewing then it would be a different story.

Agreed that NetFlix on the iPad isn't useful as a primary device, especially when you can get Netflix on your big screen TV via AppleTV, PS3, XBox 360, etc.

However, the iPad is perfect as a secondary viewing service, like when the big screen is in use (or the room the big screen is in use). Also, remember that the iPad can be connected to a TV/Large Monitor with the right cables, and the NetFlix App will use the Video Out of an iPad - in HD (but no surround sound).

My son looks at Netflix on the AppleTV *first* when he's looking for something to watch. It helps that the UI for searching/browsing titles on the AppleTV is so much better than the PS3's Netflix interface.

(FWIW, the Wii UI for NetFlix is terrible, no one in their right mind would use that if they didn't have to).

Unless we're traveling, the only video that plays on the iPad is for our two little kids; if I'm watching something, I'd prefer the 42 inch with surround sound versus the iPad. Love the iPad, it's just not a primary video device for me.
