Macworld Expo 2011: Altigen Communications' iFusion handset

Whenever you meet up with anyone at big conventions like last week's Macworld 2011, you eventually ask what they've seen lately that's cool. Everyone wants to know what the hottest item on the floor is, the most interesting thing to see or check out at the show. Last week, more often than not, my answer was the iFusion from Altigen Communications. Like the iRetrophone, the iFusion is a full-scale handset with an iPhone dock on it, and it works via Bluetooth with your iPhone to either let you speak through the handle or have a speakerphone conversation. Altigen is a huge phone provider, and it also has an official business phone app on the App Store that allows for separate intranet extension dialing (and a bunch of other business-based features), but it decided to build and sell this handset just for the heck of it.

iFusion works with any app that supports Bluetooth, including the built-in Phone app, Skype, Line2 and any others. There's even a USB cord in the back, so the phone can also sync through the handset. I got to play with it at Macworld, and iFusion is nice and strong; it's a little light, but very durable and well-made. Altigen told me that it was aiming for an Apple aesthetic with the device, and while it doesn't quite get there, it does look good.

iFusion is US$169 and will be available for sale in April. I bet there will be plenty of businesses aiming to buy a bunch of these, but I wouldn't mind having one for my own home. I haven't owned a landline for years now, and it would be nice to have a handset again.

We have over 3,100 ports of AltiGen running on numerous servers including one of the top 3 auto manufactures. Our systems are very stable and we are not held hostage by proprietary hardware and software. As for the iFusion which we have been following with great excitement, we got to demo the phone awhile back and can’t wait to deploy with our AltiGen mobile services. Although I will have a few in my house the real advantage will be in our offices. We can’t wait until this is available. Great job AltiGen.

As far as I know, Skype does not support bluetooth (yet).

Yeah, and also AFAIK neither do any other VoIP apps - the API for acessing the BT handsfree profile isn't available the last time I checked.

Someone suckered my company into buying an Altigen phone system. Biggest. POS. Evar. It spends more time down then up, and the servers I think are leftovers from the coldwar...

Archion, AltiGen has some good technical support. If your company's server is down more than up, you should look toward your staff instead of the server to see where the issue lies.

On topic- I love the idea of this phone and I'm glad AltiGen made it before Apple did. I don't care if the buttons are 100% "apple-aesthetic" or not... The price makes up for it!

I pre-ordered mine and can't wait for it to arrive. I want it now! Another great thing is even though my husband does not have an iPhone, this handset is Bluetooth and he can still use my cool phone, paired with his Android, while I am away.

Yes, they do have excellent tech support, To get to it I had to bypass our idiot vendor. But all the greatest support in the world cannot make up for substandard and obsolete failure prone hardware.

The photo looks like AT&T's idea of "tethering"
