Apple (re)posts Xcode 4 GM

Apple teased us Thursday afternoon with a sneak peek at the Xcode 4 GM before pulling it. Now, the company has re-posted the gold master and it's ready for registered developers to go and download.

Xcode 4 introduces a fully updated integrated design environment for Mac and iOS developers with lots of beautiful new bells and whistles that were first introduced in a WWDC keynote last summer. It's been a long time waiting for this new tool to come out of beta, but we're all glad it's finally here.

If you're a developer, head on over to the Apple devcenter and download a copy.

Thanks, Chuck T.

Looks fancy indeed.

Does anyone know which gcc is shipped with it and does it include a gfortran compiler as well?

Probably the same version as the previous XCode with Apple patches. Now I fouls be wrong, but I believe Apple has totally rejected version 3 of the GPL. So no software will be used that carries that license. Obviously you need to look for confirmation as this is very third hand info.

That is one issue the other is that LLVM & CLANG are pretty much ready for prime time. Since I'm nit a registered developer I can't say for sure but Apple would likely make that the default vompiler in XCode 4. Maybe even make it the required compiler. Part of the rationalf for doing so is that the editor can be better integrated with the various tools.

Even if both of these points turn out to be nonsense it is in your best interest to move to LLVM & CLANG sooner rather than later. The writing is on the wall here as Apple has rather significant involvement in the development of all of the tools built around the LLVM project. For many developers the LLVM tools are a net gain. That is final code is often faster and development itself is quicker.

Hey David,

thanks for the reply .. didn't know that was a change waiting to happen. Definitively something to keep an eye on.

Unfortunately we are quite dependent on a fortran library, so a fortran compiler is mandatory. At the moment I am using the hpc.sourceforge.net extension to add gfortran (and a slightly newer GCC). It is not very pretty, but it works ... I had hoped Apple would add a full gcc this time around.

Come on. I just downloaded beta 6 yesterday, after I realized I was still on beta 1 or 2. Just glad I don't have capped broadband. Here goes another 4 gigs and 3 hours of no internet use...
