iTunes controlled 65% of online movies sales in 2010

iTunes is the top seller of downloadable movies, controlling two thirds of the total market, according to IHS Screen Digest. This proud distinction is focused on the actual purchase of movies from iTunes, not streaming internet rentals (such as those offered by Netflix). IHS is a market research firm that analyzes streaming video and the electronic sales of movies, which makes this kind of study their exact bailiwick.

The closest runner up to Apple's success was Microsoft, who only sold a quarter of the movies that Apple did. If you add up all the non-Apple online retail outlets for electronic movies, they make up a little more than one third of the available sales. Of course, selling movies online is a relatively new business, and things could change in 2011. In the meantime, it seems if you want to sell a movie online, you really need to be on iTunes.

It would have been nice to have mentioned that Apple lost 10%points in year to year comparision while the contender gain grounds.

I downloaded quite a few movies from iTunes. I like that you just decide to watch a movie and pretty much instantly can start watching it, without having to go to Blockbuster first. Also the selection is pretty much unmatched at least here in Germany.

I think Apple is focusing more on rental for movies now.

considering the new Apple TV doesn't even support buying movies.

Anybody else notice that their HD files kind of SUCK? They're poorly compressed and don't show well on high end TV's. At $5 a pop, the $1.50 Bluray rental at Redbox has become much more attractive choice for me.

I'm wondering how people are watching these movies, are they syncing to their iPads and iPhones, or just watching in front of the computer?

So what does one do when one would like to rent or buy a movie that is not available on iTunes and never will be because of the thought police?

Not interested in streaming it. Want to be able to download it and watch it on an airplane.

I have some issues renting or buying movies from apple on my new apple tv2.
I tried to rent movies twice and both time I could see the picture and had no sound. The first time I ended up downloading the movie on my ipad and there were no issues. I had to wait close to 2 hours for the entire movie.
At first I thought there was a problem with my network, but a week later I tried again and same thing happen. I tried to contact the apple but I kept on getting the run around so I just unplugged the damn apple tv and put in its box.
Anyone else have this problem?

Depending on your internet connection and whether you choose the HD option, these movie files can become pretty big .. so 2h doesn't seem out of this world slow but rather average.

I never had problems with the movies I bought or rented. I had a couple hickups with songs I bought and always found the support quite forthcoming and helpful.

That may be a stupid question, but did you ever hear any sound from your Apple TV (like played music or aother movie) so that you can exclude setup or hardware problems?

I've used my apple tv many times but mostly to watch Netflix. As a matter of fact it has become the favorite Friday night thing to do with the wife. This time she wanted to watch "eat, love and pray" and that movie is not yet available on Netflix. I am not saying apple people are not helpful but rather that I hate the red tape they put you thru for something that minor. Thanks for the tip, I'll check again tonight Ti make sure I am not pulling HD movies.
