Sparrow mail application now available in the Mac App Store

Sparrow announced today that version 1.0 of its popular email application is now available in the Mac App Store. The developers listened to customer feedback and dropped the price from US$25 to a much lower $9.99. The paid version is free of advertisements and lets you add multiple email accounts. A free, ad-supported version, Sparrow Lite, is also completed and awaiting App Store approval.

A quick note for those that installed the beta version. You will notice the Mac App Store detects this beta version and prevents you from purchasing the full 1.0 version. To purchase version 1.0 from the App Store, you must uninstall the beta app using the instructions here. Once the beta version is removed, purchasing and installing the paid version will be as easy as pie.

Thus far, the customer response to Sparrow has been incredibly favorable. After a mere few hours on the Mac App Store, the mail application has already climbed to the #1 spot on the top paid applications chart. It is also #2 in top grossing applications and is bested only by Apple's Aperture. We have been following the application since its debut late last year and have been impressed with its elegant simplicity and clean interface. We recommend you give Sparrow a try.

Really wanted to see this app work well, but there's a few missing elements in the transition from Gmail.

1. No signatures specific to aliases.
2. Not all keyboard shortcuts translate appropriately. Trying to switch to your All Mail or Inbox just brings up an label selection drop down menu.
3. You can't auto filter / auto label emails.
4. No way to access your spam folder to double check.

I love simplicity, but not at the expense of the power-user options that make Gmail so indispensable. Not the worst $10 I ever spent, but I can't imagine Sparrow on a regular basis. Back to the browser for me.

In fact I use Mail at work, and Eudora at home, on exactly the same set of messages. I find Eudora (I'm talking original Eudora 6.1, not the Thunderbird reskin thing) is instant response and far more stable, and never misses a beat, while Mail thinks, and thinks, and thinks... But I'm grateful for the various suggestions. It would be nice to move to a slicker interface sometime!

Do I also have to pay an additional $20 to get the DVD?

Sorry. :-)

Not meant to be a know on Sparrow Mail, but can someone explain to me what makes the $10 Sparrow Mail better than the free Mail.app on 10.6.6? The Mail app is fast and works seemlessly with my MobileMe, Gmail and work Exchange accounts (not to mention full synchronization with my iCal calendars).

@Ken: I've seen this dozens of times at my workplace. At some point, Eudora is going to choke on such large mailboxes (e.g. if the in.mbox file gets corrupt) and you are going to lose some mail...

i've been running the beta since the second version came out, as the first wasn't even able to actually send mail. after deleting it, then reinstalling it again, i've since weened myself off of mailplane and fallen in love with this little über minimalist app - sans two major issues that are hopefully fixed in v1.0.

there's no way to actually get to your contacts. i emailed them after searching forever, and with a very quick reply, they confirmed that there's no way to access your contacts except via a browser, to which i was like wtf? second, there's no way to access spam and delete it either. so, until they fix these two issues, i cannot see myself purchasing this app just yet!

Ken, I am a power user as well, and have used Apple's Mail all forever (I run a tech support company in NYC). How exactly does it, or others, not work for you in regard to volume? I get tons of emails as well, and it runs as quickly as ever. Except for on older machines, Mail never seems to skip a beat, even though I often wish it had some of the features of other apps, like Sparrow, Mailplane and Outlook.

Can anyone comment on how fit for purpose this is for 'power users'. I get about a thousand emails a day, and am still currently using Eudora because I've yet to find another email program that will handle the volume without choking. Anyone?
