MacDec provides another way to combine keyboard and Magic Trackpad

There's a growing number of devices that allow Mac users to combine their keyboards and Magic Trackpads into a single unit. Steve Sande took a look at TwelveSouth's MagicWand not long ago.

But if you have the money to spare and want something really sleek -- and expensive -- thodio will sell you the MacDec, a thick slab made out of wood or acrylic that will hold your devices securely in place with the aid of eight powerful magnets. The wood MacDecs run roughly $138 and the acrylic around $165 -- the original prices are in Euros.

Unlike the MagicWand, which places the Magic Trackpad to the side of the keyboard, the MacDec orders them in a laptop-like configuration, actually in the shape of a 15-inch MacBook Pro.

I'm surprised that TUAW did not mention the obvious similarity of Thodio's MacDec to The Bullet Train Express, that TUAW reviewed in this blog a few weeks ago. I've seen many products that are similar, but the MacDec is more than just similar, it's practically a clone of the Bullet Train Express.

Without seeing them in person I prefer the Bullet Train as well.

I'm with some of the other commenters: a solution to a non existent problem...

If your going to make the thing take up the size of a Macbook prom put something in the free space that I want to use. Maybe more speakers, combine one of those "cordless charging" systems for phones... something!

As a trackpad and keyboard owner, I could never see myself using that, especially if those "eight powerful magnets" make my cuff-links and watch cling to my desk...

Sorry, maybe next time, Thodio!

I just got my BulletTrain Express a couple of weeks ago. Milled aluminum, very sharp, very clean & very "Apple". Added to my 15" MBP setup along with a Henge Dock & 60" LCD TV, it's the perfect media solution. Thodio is correct about the laptop-like configuration. For me, trying to use BT keyboard & Magic Trackpad from my couch was a nightmare, now it's just like having my MBP in my lap.

Good concept, but I prefer the BulletTrain Express. http://bullettrain.com/express.html

@everyone, thanks for your feedback.

Actually, the palm rest area is more than big enough and makes this product far more ergonomic and efficient than other side by side configurations, especially when used on your lap.

Damn! That sure looks like a rip off of the Bullet Train Express, that's made and sold right here in the good old U.S. of A. The BTE is an aluminum platform, with velcro, rather than magnets, that keep the keyboard and Magic Trackpad from falling off of the board.

I made one of these out of wood and the price should be nowhere near $140. I would sell mine for $50!

A solution to a non-existent problem. Seriously now, that is about the stupidest, un-ergonomic thing I've seen in a long time.

Seems like the "palm rest" areas of this would be too small, given how big the magic trackpad.
