Apple TV update adds MLB, NBA streaming

It's not just the mobile iOS devices that got some update love today. The current-model Apple TV also has a software update (to version 4.2), which adds some intriguing features for sports fans.
The marquee features of this update are the additions of MLB.TV and NBA Game Time as streaming content options. Subscribers to these services (starting at $20/mo for the baseball side, and $65 for the NBA season) get streaming video of games, on-demand content and more. It's a big step towards enabling the Apple TV as a digital hub for the living room -- although, as pointed out, the Roku and Boxee devices have had this capability for a while (not to mention the Sony PS3).
Beyond the new streaming content, the update includes 5.1 Dolby sound for Netflix streaming, an improved onscreen keyboard, new slideshow themes, and the souped-up AirPlay feature to work with iOS 4.3 devices. Lots to enjoy!

There are so many issues with Netflix and the ATV2. I was hoping for some improvement or update there.
It seems like the ATV2 doesn't adapt picture quality for the available bandwidth as well as my Wii, MacBook, iPhone, BluRay, and Atari 2600 can.
I think the MLBtv is a good thing and a step forward, I used the PS3 app last season and the results where pretty good. If you live outside the US it's the only way to watch baseball anyway. PS3 app unlike the ATV2 app is not accessing Spring training games so a plus for the ATV2. If the ATV2 gets a bump to an A5 chip then maybe that'll be an improvement also. What we need now is BBC iPlayer on ATV2 and that's another reason to leave the PS3 switched off.

I have tons of metadata added into my ripped stuff and it doesn't show the description anymore either when leaving something highlighted for a few seconds on the listing (when the image moves and shows the title and time) nor when pushing up twice while a video is playing.

March 09 2011 at 5:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou can actually watch hulu on your tv via AirPlay. There is no option for it, but
If you play around a bit, you'll stumble onto it. I've made it work on both the iPad and iPhone 4.
Start with YouTube and the path forward will avail itself to you with a little messing around.
Sadly, I am guessing this will be fixed in like 4.3.1 since hulu's broadcast masters seem to think that a TV is a magical box or something and what you watch on a computer is different from watching the same thing on a tv.

Yes, I'm waiting for this too!
March 10 2011 at 9:40 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is big news. I can't think of one update for the first AppleTV that added this much content at once. I wasn't sure where Apple was going when the 2nd Gen came out, but it seems like this is moving from "hobby" to real Roku box competitor. I highly doubt we'll see AmazonOD anytime soon but here's hoping to see Hulu+ and Pandora in the future (I know I can stream from the iOS but it would be nice not to need to rely on using the iPhone/Pad).
March 09 2011 at 4:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replybring on HULU and make the APPLETV see my NAS drive, and it would be complete. I would take the latter as the first upgrade!
March 09 2011 at 4:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI already can use my NAS just fine. Jailbreak with greenp0ison and install XBMC. Works like a champ and my Hulu+ account works with it now as well (Although Hulu is trying to block it apparently)
March 09 2011 at 9:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThanks. I have been contemplating on whether or not to do it!

March 09 2011 at 4:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo I can now stream video from the youtube webpage in my iphone's safari browser instead of using the dated youtube app native to my iphone!?
