Install iMovie on a 1st-generation iPad

One improvement coming to the iPad 2 is the addition of tablet-optimized versions of iMovie and GarageBand. iMovie is limited to the iPad 2 because the second generation tablet includes cameras to record video footage and a faster processor to handle the demands of video processing. Some original iPad owners were not content with Apple's limitation and sought a way to install iMovie on Apple's fist generation tablet. Here are the steps they devised:

  1. Before your start, backup your iPad in case something goes horribly wrong
  2. Purchase (US$4.99) and download the latest version of iMovie (version 1.2 on 3/11/2011)
  3. Download and install the iPhone Configuration Utility (IPCU) from Apple. Version 3.3 for Mac or Windows
  4. Launch IPCU and click on the Library ----> Applications. If iMovie is present in this list, then this step is completed and you can move to step 5. If iMovie is not present, then you will need to add it manually by clicking on the "Add" button and selecting the application from the "/Users/[my account]/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications" folder
  5. Within IPCU, navigate to devices, select your iPad and click on the applications associated with the tablet device. Scroll down to iMovie and select the "Install" button to add the application to your device.
  6. Wait a few seconds to iMovie to install onto your tablet.
  7. Quit IPCU and restart your iPad.
  8. Launch iMovie and edit movies that were imported from your iTunes library.

Be aware that iTunes will throw an error the next you time to sync your iPad. You will receive the alert that this device is no longer authorized for use with your iTunes account. This error arises from the unexpected presence of iMovie on your first generation iPad. At this point, you can authorize it and let iTunes process your response and prompt you again. You can also click "Don't Authorize" and let iTunes remove iMovie from your iPad or click cancel and move on. Unfortunately, this annoyance with iTunes will continue until you remove iMovie. A small price to pay in order to edit video on your first generation Apple tablet.

Doesn't work for me. IPCU says it installs iMovie, but then it uninstalls it more or less immediately. Even if I try to quit IPCU quickly, it seems to uninstall iMovie as it quits. Anyone else with that problem?

I cannot access my applications from the utility. It shows the folder but will not open the folder to see the apps. What am I doing wrong?

I was able to install iMovie on my iPad 1. However, I can't get any video in iTunes to actually show in the video source window in iMovie.

It says, you can just press "cancel" and move on.

Why is everyone implying that you have to remove iMovie each time you sync?

I just used the tip to install iMovie on my iPad 1 w/ iOS 4.3. I have an iPhone 3G and I can't upgrade it to 4.3 so I'm at 4.2. I tried the same trick for that and it did not work so is it impossible to install it on a iPhone 3G?

iMovie is not able to work on a iPhone 3G.

I would think that iMovie definitely would not work well on an iPhone 3G, even if you could get it to install.

In case it's not clear.

“At this point, you can authorize it and let iTunes process your response and prompt you again.” = You can't sync your iPad with iTunes without removing iMovie.

It's fun to install it the once and have a play (and note that it works perfectly and Apple should let us all install it) but it's not worth giving up the ability to sync for.

Might be handy if you knew you needed it ahead of time and threw it on before venturing out as a “one off”.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I have some trips planned where I might want to shoot short video clips with my portable camera, and, being away from Home Base, I won't be syncing anyway, so this doesn't need to be an every-sync workaround. I could be an as-needed workaround. Put iMovie on before you leave, export all of your stuff before you sync again, and take it off when you get back. Not ideal, and it's unfortunate that you have to resort to these methods, but you do get to add functionality that you didn't originally have with your iPad, so it seems like a good deal to me.

Effing tripe. Why wouldn't they allow it on iPad. I have a 3Gs and would love to import and edit videos I take with it on iPad. :-/

Or if jailbroken, install Installous, ssh/anything to to your iPad, put the ipa on Installous download folder and install directly from iPad.
Uncheck the Sync with iTunes option and no errors because iTunes will never know that you have iMovie installed.
