Poll: Some issues reported around using cables between iPad versions

Experiencing cable woes? TUAW reader Chris Arnold of Sumo Computers sent in this photo demonstrating why he believes his original iPad cable had problems working with his iPad 2. TUAW rigorously tested several cables but was unable to duplicate these issues -- all the cables we tested worked fine with both iPads.
What about you? Are your cables giving you any problems? Let us know in this handy poll.
| Nope, I'm having the same problems as Chris | |
|---|---|
| Yes, they work just fine | |
| Haven't had a chance to test, I'm afraid | |
| Cables? You're writing a post about cables? What is wrong with you people? I am leaving this site and never returning. I'm going now. Really. Bye! (I mean it this time.) | |
| Slow news day, huh? |

This is no more variation than exists with previous cables and connectors. I have iPhone, iPad, iPod and cable combinations that work with varying degrees of ease or difficultyâbut never lack of successâdepending on the generation of the device and/or where I got the cable from. Could it be that Mr. Arnold is an "ooh, big crisis, snagged a nail" type of customer?

I'd totally buy some orange ones for like a quadzillion dollars though.
Errr yeah...
the cable i have at work (from an old ipod, but used to charge my phone) works just fine. the left side springy press-to-release button doesn't engage anymore, but whatever. it still charges my phone.
plus, design wise, i dig that my 3gs cable at home is smaller and has no side buttons at all. i don't have an ipad, but honestly i'm surprised apple instituted old cables?
Obviously a trick question. Let me explain:
"Are your cables giving you any problems? Let us know in this handy poll."
If a cable were causing a problem, as in the case of Chris Arnold's cables, the correct answer would be:
"Yes, my cables are giving me a problem just like Chris Arnold of Sumo Computers."
If the cables were functioning correctly the appropriate answer would be:
"No, they are not giving me any problems, the cables are functioning correctly."
On the basis of inappropriate and highly questionable question and answer manipulation by The Unofficial Apple Weblog, I hereby declare this poll invalid.

This could be an issue with some. I have cables with different size notches also. If you purchase any aftermarket cables you will see this. I have cables from many suppliers and some from Apple themselves said to be for the iPhone but have different notches. I think this is a supplier thing more than an Apple evil plan to get you to buy different cables. I remember reading a post from an Asian supplier that even warned users of their own cables that if it didn't fit properly and was hard to attach/detach from the device to stop using it. I purchased three cables from them and they were all different. I truly believe that to mass produce such a product with such small components and be consistent across the board is impossible. Don't cram a square peg in a round hole!

People are upset because the sync cable that came with the original version of the iPad, doesn't work with the iPad 2 (the newest version) which comes with it's OWN sync cable to fit that particular model?
What am I missing? Would that be the same as being upset because my dell laptop power cord from 2001 doesn't work with my dell laptop I purchased in 2011?
This is why you get a cord with just about every device you buy from Apple people, it's in the packaging is it not???... not for universal use, but because maybe it's for that specific model of product???
March 14 2011 at 6:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySeriously, who want to carry multiple cables that do the same thing?
March 14 2011 at 9:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWe expect standardization on most hardware -- or a prominent design change and awareness of same.
Your video connector on your computer monitor... What if you bought a new MacMini in which there was no mention that the video connector was different, but actually was not compatible with your existing monitor?
Or today, you attempted to fill the gasoline tank on your new car, and was pleased to discover the fuel nozzle required you to go buy a different car?
One of Apple's strengths is an Eco System of similar (compatible) devices. This harms that--not makes it easier.
@ redcard ... I think the post is worthless. Assuming one has an iPad and iPad 2 why would you use an older cable to charge a newer device anyways? TUAW makes me sleepy.
bye.
Not surprising, people have been experiencing issues with the iPod Touch as of late also.

I can't decide if the 4th option is you mocking your readership, or it's an admission that this post really is utterly worthless.
