Dear Aunt TUAW: Can I use my iPhone 4 videos in the iPad 2's iMovie app?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I just bought the awesome iMovie for my new iPad 2. Now I want to be able to import videos that I captured on my iPhone 4 into iMovie on the iPad and edit them there.
How can I do this?
Love,
Your niece Nixie

Dear Nixie,
I'm afraid I have both good and bad news for you, so let's start with the bad and move onto the good: you cannot import video directly into iMovie from your iPhone 4.
Although you can hook up the $29 Camera Connection Kit and transfer that data over, you'll have to use the standard connection software and import your video into your central iPad photos and video library first.
Only then will you be able to access those assets from iMovie and edit them.
This may be a feature that Apple adds to future versions of iMovie and iOS (leave your suggestion for Apple), but at this time, applications cannot access data via the connection kit.
Hugs,
Auntie T.

Actually, yes, you can! The new version of iMovie allows for transferring between devices, via iTunes.
This is documented in the iMovie Help section.
Not only can you transfer videos, but entire projects too. And photos.
Erica should edit her answer, as many people will take her answer for granted and not read this comment.
While it's true that you can also use the camera connection kit, the reader is not asking whether you can transfer directly to iPad.
not at all. Because Erica answered the question asked. You didn't. What you are talking about is something totally different

I am getting quite anxious right now. I ordered the iPad 2 online on friday night, when it said it would ship in 2-3 weeks, but when I saw that it would be shipped on April 1st, I got so frustrates that I decided there must be a better way. So, I put down $100 at my local Best Buy to reserve one, but now I'm worried that it won't come any sooner. Can you offer me any solace with regards to these worries?
Your adoring nephew,
Evan (evanskis)
why not just use an app? photo transfer app makes life super easy, just shoot it on your iphone and then transfer it into your ipad's camera roll. it's then there for you to use in imovie.

Sync your photos with your iPad. Make sure your iPhone videos are synced into the folder you are syncing with your iPad.
MAKE SURE You check "Include Videos"
Once you've done that, they'll be aviailable to use in iMovie.
OR the Camera Connection Kit.
Easy peasy. As long as it's an iPhone video file it will sync properly and be accessible from iMovie.
And as long as you have a computer with you. Since the iPad is a decent computer for a lot of people (like my dad), you shouldn't really need one.

You just use the export feature in iMovie on the iPhone, it syncs to iTunes under the Apps tab of the device->File Sharing (at the bottom)->Apps->iMovie. Select the movie and save it to your desktop or wherever, then sync it back to iMovie on the iPad the same way. The data is intact, so it is a project, not the compiled final movie.
I've already done this, it works great to finish editing a project you started on the iPhone and wanted to finish on the iPad. Alas, it does not work with iMovie for the mac :(
It might also be easy to use an online backup service/app like Dropbox to put the movie files in your storage cloud, then grab it with your iPad. Also I think you could use a WiFi file transfer app like AirSharing (along with your Mac) to access folders on the Mac (drop file from iPhone to Mac, then pick it up with the iPad).
It would be nice if Apple would just integrate these this more directly within iOS.
This mut require 4.3 for iPhone as it won't show up in any capacity for me on iPad 2 and iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1

March 15 2011 at 4:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat is, transfer from iPhone to iPad -- no editing on either device, obviously.
