Switzerland leads in Mac market share around the world

The official Pingdom blog did a little research into Mac market share around the world according to StatCounter (all based on browser visits to a pretty solid sample of 3 million websites), and it turns out that Switzerland is the most Mac country in the world. OS X has a 17.61 percent market share there, making it the country with the highest share on the planet. We've actually heard this before -- the Macworld Expo has been to Switzerland, and there are a number of terrific Apple Stores in that country as well. The Swiss really love their quality computers, apparently.

Luxembourg follows next on the list, and the United States comes in at third with 15.36 percent Mac share. The United Kingdom, strangely, didn't make it into the top 10 of the list at all, and the Mac share in Asia, where Apple is making big pushes lately, is only 1.61 percent. Granted, one percent of a couple billion computers is still a lot, but you'd expect that to grow over the next few years.

The least Mac-savvy region in the entire world? South America, where Mac OS X, according to these numbers, claims only a 1.08 percent market share. Looks like more of our friends to the south will have to look into just how enjoyable using a Mac can be.

I tried to get my old Epson 1670 scanner running on my macmini (OSX 10.6) and as Epson haven't updated the drivers l was stumped. I fired up my almost 10 years old G3 macbook (PPC 800mhz 640MB Ram) and it had the software there so I was able to get it running no problems. Thats why I love Macs

Do you just wait for any story that has anything to do with Switzerland and then type that "joke" in? We get it, you're funny.

Oh no.. Denmark is not even top 5. What a shame.. I saw some years ago that Iceland was NR 1.. with 11%.. but good to see that others are "opening their eyes"... keep it up

What isn't mentioned in the article is that in third place is Iceland. One of the countries that Apple so handily deleted from the world map at the introduction of the iPhone 3 (the other country was Greenland - only the biggest friggin' island in the world... :) )

And it doesn't mention that even though Apple did show a whole country such contempt, Apple products are still among the more popular ones.

Neither does it mention that App Store is not available there, and neither is iTunes Music Store.

Nor does it mention that the Apple retailer (which by the way isn't "official" Apple) has by far the worst service and response time of _any_ vendor in the market (six WEEKS for a simple repair to take place is NOT uncommon!)

Yet people jump on the Apple bandwagon like there's no tomorrow...

I guess Jobs' RDF stretches further than 福島市's nuclear radiation perimeter... :)

A ranking of the countries with the highest income would be very similar.

As some TUAW members have already said, Apple is very expensive in Latin America and there is not much to choose.

Yes, it should be noted that in some places, tariffs are very high so any computer not "home grown" is super expensive - clearly anyone can slap together a WIN PC. And in the SF Bay Area, Macs shares are around 25% and about 25% of all cell phones are iphones ... affluent markets understand value - that paying a little more upfront for a college education, a mac or a car might cost a little more out of pocket today but is cheaper or a better value in the long run.

Pretty misleading stats. Switzerland has a tiny (and rich) population.

They should be showing the actual numbers as opposed to a percentage?

For example if Switzerland has a million PCs this means there are 176,100 macs.

If the UK has a 10 Million PCs, and has a market share of just 1%, it still has far more macs.

Stats were invented for marketing.

Not good at math eeh? Percentage is the ONLY option if you want to count market-share. SHARE. Not "how many Mac are sold" but "how many people use Macs" vs. "how many use PCs". Now, that's when % come in handy. Off course we have less mac's total than the UK, but thats not the point. The point is, how many users use Macs vs. how many use PC in regard to the population.

Market share percentage must be the whole truth eh?

Ok I just did a straw poll and turns out Apple have 100% market share in my house. Quick write an article about it.

The point is if % is to be used show the "based on a sample of " figures. That would gives stats like this more meaning.

If percentages have to be used then provide figures for the total number so

Damn! I'm from that little 1,08%... Here in Argentina, the biggest problem is that you can get a mac "just" for twice the price in USA... for example... here a MBA 11" is about AR$5800 with a GREAT discount!

All countries in the top 10 are rich or super rich.

Gee, I wonder why. Might this be BECAUSE MACS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN NORMAL PCs?

No, Macs are actually just as "expensive" as similarly configured PCs.

Crap PCs with yesteryear's hardware are however somewhat cheaper, but then, I wouldn't expect them to last 3-5 years like the more expensive counterparts do :)
