iPhoto 11 freezes cured by 10.6.7 update?

Looks like this may have done the trick. The Apple Support board has been filled for months with complaints about major freezes in iPhoto 11. The issue many people had, including myself, was that iPhoto would freeze, sometimes for 5 minutes or more.

In fact, your whole Mac would become unresponsive. Then, after a while, things would return to normal. It was happening on some older Intel Mac Pro machines and some iMacs. The common thread seemed to be Macs that had a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card, but some other cards were implicated as well.

It got so bad that some people gave up on iPhoto completely and moved to Aperture or Picasa. Every update to either Snow Leopard or iPhoto got hopes up, but nothing seemed to help... until now. The latest update to Snow Leopard seems to have squashed the bug, and many people are finding the mysterious paralysis is now gone.

I tried iPhoto 11 myself today, and I could not trigger the lock up no matter what I did. So if you've been suffering from the problem, see if this latest OS update fixes the issue and give us the good (or bad) news.

It's a miracle! After many months of struggling w/ iPhoto '11 to the point of being unusable, I'm now able to use it successfully after the 10.6.7 update. Thanks very much for posting this resolution!!!

Hm, I've again been reading stories of freezes and incompatibilities with the 10.6.7 update. I remember when updates were a thing to look forward to, these days I have to do a lot of research before even contemplating an install, and then more often than not opt against installing it.

I'm experience freezes due to Apple's CRAP graphics drivers support. The support forum is overflowing with complaints, since 2009 (!!) but it still hasn't been fixed. Disappointing.

Have made SuperDuper clone so will give 10.6.7 a whirl. Not holding my breath.

I had a freezing issue with the last version of snow leopard as every time i connected Ipad to Itunes it froze the mac ( late 2008 15inch Mac Book Pro)
and the 10.6.7 update fixed it and the mac seems speedier as well though that may be subjective observation on my part!

You guys aren't using the iPhoto numbers right! iPhoto 9 IS iPhoto '11. It's silly, yes, but that is the name of the product.

I've installed 10.6.7 and I am no longer experiencing the lock up issue with iPhoto 11. I could not believe it and tested for an hour with no issue.

I have a iMac6,1 dual core 2 duo 2.18ghz with a nvidia 7300GT

Very happy now!

Hm, I have the same machine and ditched iPhoto 11 and reverted to 9. I have freezes in some other applications as well, but always in relation to channel exception errors in the OpenGL driver.

Hm... might go ahead and install 10.6.7 afterall then. But only after a complete drive clone, though...

iPhoto is still doing this on my 21" 3.06 Core 2 iMac after the update. Sigh. It typically freezes on launch for 5-10 minutes. The problem had mysteriously disappeared, and came back with the 10.6.7 update.

UGH, I was hoping after reading this it would finally be fixed but it hasn't been fixed for me. I have the newest 15" MBP (with Thunderbolt).

When I go to type in info on a photo (like a description) it will freeze for at least 5 minutes before I lose my mind and have to force quit. I literally can not use this feature because of the swirling beach ball. So annoying.
