Orb TV streams video from your Mac to your TV
I've been playing around with the US$99 Orb TV for a few weeks now, and I have to say I'm quite impressed with it. For those of you not familiar with it, Orb TV is a media streamer that connects to your TV and lets you play any video from your computer to your television. It's shaped like a hockey puck, and at a 95 mm diameter and a 21 mm thickness, it comes in smaller than the new Apple TV.
Despite a few hiccups in getting it connected the first day, I've found the Orb TV easy to use. Simply connect the component or composite cables from the Orb TV device to your TV, then launch the Orb software on your Mac. The Orb software will search your media libraries and pick up all your non-DRM video, music and photos. Next, download the free Orb Controller universal iOS app and navigate through you video library with ease. When you find a video you want to play, simply tap it to play it now or add it to your video queue. It's also important to note that the Orb TV doesn't have an interface -- not one that appears on your TV screen anyway. You control everything through the Orb Controller on your iPhone, iPad or Android device. There is also an Orb Mini Controller for Mac and PC for those users without an iOS or Android device.
Orb TV also allows you to watch Hulu, Netflix and YouTube videos right through your TV. But my favorite thing about the Orb TV is that it picks up any non-DRM video -- not just video in your iTunes music library -- on your Mac and streams it to your TV. This means that you don't have to have all your movies in one central location on your Mac, nor do they have to be in one specific format as Orb supports H.264 BP/MP/HP, VC-1 SP/MP/AP, MPEG4 SP/ASP, MPEG2 MP and MPEG1.
The biggest drawback is the lack of an HDMI port. Still, my HD video came in clear and crisp on my 1080p TV. Also the Orb controller software could use a bit of a redesign. It works just fine, but it has more of a bare bones UI as opposed to a well thought out software controller feel. That being said, for $99, the Orb TV is a good product for those looking to stream videos from their Mac to their HDTV.

Plex can run on the older AppleTV, there is a version for AppleTV2 but you need to jailbreak. Plex is also available on iPhone and iPad as well as Android. Mobile clients can be used as a remote with gesture support. It runs on a Mac mini. LG announced Plex support in their newest televisions The Plex Media Server runs on a Mac or Windows. It organizes your media and populates metadata automatically. Plex is a native Mac app that was forked from XBMC. It is much better than XBMC. It is very much like Boxee but the media server makes it better.
Plex media server and the client on the Mac is free. As is the Windows media server version. The mobile clients can remote control and play the streaming video. The mobile clients cost money which is being used to fund further development.
I have a Mac running the Plex media server. A NAS for storage of my media library. 3 other Mac clients, two ATV2 clients (jail broken), 2 iPads and an iPhone acting as remotes and clients. All clients can stream different videos at the same time. If you pause and exit a show or movie you can pickup where you left off on another client.
All this is free with the exception being the iPad apps which were $4.99. You install the server tell it where your media is and tell it to use iTunes and iPhoto. Add plugins for Netflix, ABC, CBS, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. All extremely easy. The clients just see the server over Bonjour.

Orbs biggest asset since the iOS app intro a few years back is that it will stream all your music and videos AND LIVE TV to your device anywhere. This is totally separate from this 99 hardware puck and a hell of a lot cheaper. It also gives you access via any Internet connected computer.

March 24 2011 at 12:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere are a lot of options. Yours is one, this is another... and this one is more likely to be used by a greater number of people, since most people don't have DNLA-enable TVs.

Even TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store? Wouldn't Apple's DRM prevent that?
Hi Tony, as I mentioned in the post, Orb TV won't play DRM'd video, but many people keep non-DRM video in their iTunes library. However, I've edited the post to specify non-DRM iTunes video.

March 24 2011 at 5:38 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor the same price, you can get an Apple TV 2 which, among all the other "official" features, can be jailbroken which allows you to install XBMC on it. After that, you can play the same Orb streams on your TV (with HDMI)

I'm eagerly waiting for that, as a complement to the Apple TV... it's supposed to support Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, and Comedy Central streaming, as well as local video on your computer. It was supposed to be available in late February, but it isn't. $20 for a disc beats buying another set-top, especially since the disc will support 1080p.
