Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview Update 1 is out
The Lion just purred.
Apple pushed out an update to the developer preview of the next Mac operating system today. Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview Update 1 is available via Software Update and is the first update since the developer preview first came out on February 24, 2011.
The update is minuscule -- 2.2 MB -- and according to the update notes "This update is required to redeem downloads of Mac OS X Lion seed builds from the Mac App Store." There you have it -- future updates of the seed builds will be done through the Mac App Store and not Software Update.
The update follows recent reports that Apple was set to deploy a Golden Master release of the operating system, which means that the feature set for Lion could be close to being cast in stone.

"The update follows recent reports that Apple was set to deploy a GOLDEN MASTER release of the operating system, which means that the feature set for Lion could be close to being CAST IN STONE."
Besides the poor research done for this posting as pointed out repeatedly already, mix your metaphors much?
Seems awful chintzy to go from gold to stone, don't you think? ;-)

And to be clear, whereas several other sites are accurately reporting that what Apple released was Mac OS X 10 Lion Developer Preview 2 (often including a screenshot from Apple's developer site to show authenticity), you have a title which reads "Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview Update 1 is out".
I know this is just a blog, and there's an awful lot of inbreeding among news sources, both online and in traditional media. But please, TRY at least do fact checking and proofreading before posting. It's these kinds of misinformed posts that do neither you nor TUAW any justice. You're better than this.
I'm willing to bet the bank that 10.7 comes out in a $120 retail box with included USB drive or $60 download from the App Store. Justa' Hunch...

March 30 2011 at 9:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYep the title of this article is completely wrong. The update via SU is an update to the existing preview 1 to allow you to get preview 2 via the App Store. Do you research next time before posting incorrect information.

Suffice to say, its cool..... but there's a LOT of work that needs to be done on it. The full disk encryption works really well, and to me that's the biggest feature, but a lot of little things aren't working right now. Many applications I rely on every day like Steam and Windows Live Mesh either keep freezing or never start up.
I think Apple needs to continue working on the gestures, because the defaults from Snow Leopard and the defaults on Lion Preview are different enough to annoy a lot of people. The scrolling inertia has changed and I feel I have to do more work to scroll the same distance. The "reverse scrolling" gesture mimics iOS on the iPad, but doesn't translate well to a trackpad (move down on the trackpad to scroll up on the screen, and vice versa). On an iPad, its like you're flicking a piece of paper around to move it around within a window. After years of training my brain how to use a trackpad on both Windows PCs and Macs, having that flipped around by default is just screwy. Luckily, you can turn that off.
Then, there are just things that don't work at all. I can't access the recovery partition or use rEFIt to install Windows from a USB key in boot camp if I have enabled disk encryption, for example, not even on the hidden EFI partition. If I turn off encryption and run Boot Camp, Windows will refuse to install on the partition it creates even after formatting to NTFS. The list goes on and on.
Don't get me wrong - I actually like where Apple is going with Lion, and hope the final version will be much more polished and feature complete. I just have a feeling there's going to be several months of pain for early adopters while 3rd parties get their apps updated to work properly on the new OS.
"I just have a feeling there's going to be several months of pain for early adopters while 3rd parties get their apps updated to work properly on the new OS." I can't think of one OS release that didn't have several such months.

Once you've redeemed the code you'll need to download the full 3.7GB installer.
So, I guess they are planning to roll out lion via the AppStore as well then? How will that work though, I only buy 1 copy and get to install it on all my machines (not that I have that many, more of a theoretical point)? That would make things a lot cheaper if you have multiple machines in your household.
T.
I would guess that Lion will be available as a download from the MAP. Whether that will be the only method of distribution, I do not know. I certainly hope an install DVD is also made available (or a flash drive like the Airs ship with) so clean installs are possible.
Currently, you can copy the installer to as many computers as you'd like and install Lion. I assume this will remain the same (as Apple's OS DVDs currently work), but the actual license agreement will allow for one or however many installs you purchased (single, family pack, etc.).
"The update follows recent reports that Apple was set to deploy a Golden Master release of the operating system, which means that the feature set for Lion could be close to being cast in stone."
Quite the opposite. This update should put paid to the incredibly silly report that Apple would go directly from an initial Developer Preview to a Gold Master. Clearly Apple is proceeding along the well worn path of all previous OS development.
Very true. This release makes absolutely no mention of a GM and is very clearly still labeled as beta (or "preview" in Apple's terms) software.
