iPod nano rumored to get a camera

The latest rumor out of Asia suggests the iPod nano may keep its boxy shape and get its camera back. Those who keep track of the history of Apple's popular MP3 player will remember the player got an integrated camera in 2009. These modifications were quickly removed in 2010 when the player dropped the camera and shrunk down to its current boxy, small size.

The latest leaked photo from Taiwanese Mac Blog, Apple.pro, supposedly shows the casing for the seventh generation iPod nano. Merging the best of both worlds, this next iPod nano may keep the boxy shape of its predecessor and make room for a rear-facing camera. If history is any indication, we will get official confirmation of this rumor at Apple's iPod and iTunes-themed event held in the fall.

Apple probably should have introduced the 6th gen nano as a new niche device altogether—the iPod pico, for instance— instead of "downdating" the nano and replacing it.Next Gen iPod Nano Rumored To Get Camera - Breaking News, Tech News, Business, Development Design, Entertainment, Mobile, Social Media.

Although the percentage of users with discretionary income power who have a nano but not an iPhone or Touch is probably small, they are vocal (as people tend to be when you take things away from them) beyond their influence. I have an iPhone, and iPad and a nano, and while it would be nice to have a camera in the nano for some surreptitious photo or video work, it's hardly a deal-breaker.

Actually, there will be both front and rear cameras, facetime and wifi. Battery life will be extended to 183 hours of standby. New three and four finger gestures will enhance the touchscreen operations and memory will double for the same price.

Assuming this is actually an Apple part, it could be destined for a prototype. I'd like to think Apple would do a lot of usability testing before trying to sell a 2-inch-by-2-inch touchscreen camera to people.

Who knows, maybe it could start a trend.
