Rumor: New Final Cut Pro to debut on April 12

According to ProVideo Coalition, Apple is planning on debuting the next version of Final Cut Pro at the Final Cut Pro User Group SuperMeet on April 12. According to PVC, "Apple will be using the Vegas Supermeet to announce the next version of Final Cut Pro. Supposedly, Apple will be taking over the entire event for their announcement, canceling all other sponsors, including AJA, Avid, Canon, BlackMagic, Autodesk and others, who were set to give presentations."

While the FCP SuperMeet does seem to be an odd event for Apple to launch the next version of its professional editing software (because NAB 2011 starts on April 9), the rumors do seem to have credibility because Canon, Avid and Autodesk have all confirmed that their sponsorships have been canceled because Apple has demanded no one else has the main stage. A Canon spokesperson supposedly confirmed to PVC, "Canon was told last night that Apple has demanded ALL 'lectern' or stage time exclusively." Likewise, Avid told them, "Apple doesn't want anyone to have stage time but them."

There's no word yet on what the next Final Cut Pro will feature, but in February, a group of high-profile video editors were supposedly given time with the software. Their reactions to the new FCP were overwhelmingly positive, with one of them saying the next Final Cut Pro is "the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago."

Hey Chris..... http://www.tangentdevices.co.uk/products_vwave.asp
That what you want? Though Apple UI over the whole range of FCS controls is
pretty much inevitable, I find it really unlikely they wouldn't build the iPad into this new version, which beyond any 64bit speed improvements combined with the possibility of some kind of storyboard/previs tool (look at the "trailer maker" function in iMovie) makes some big and welcome changes to the package.

While normally I would have purchased an upgraded version of Final Cut, I wound up buying Adobe CS5 Production Premium last year and have to say that it really allows a lot more control over your videos than Final Cut did. Each of the programs included are designed really well and run really smoothly with Dynamic Link (so if you make a change on a file, it automatically updates it in all the other programs). Plus Adobe has extended access to their CS Live program for an extra year for free to share your work online so a client can make notes about it. Perhaps the only think the CS5 software doesn't have that would be nice is an iPad app or some form of compatibility, because that would put it over the top by far.

Think iPad integration in controlling timeline.

using the iPad as a multitouch controller for editing would be awesome.

I'd be stoked to see that, but I think where's I'd kill to see an iPad controller is for color grading. Three-wheel color controllers are so expensive this would bring a nice alternative for non-pro FCP users. You can pick up a spectacular Contour Shuttle Pro for timeline and editing control pretty inexpensively.

standard return is 14 days. However every company out there has a policy against returning open software so don't be surprised if they don't let you return them. After all, you are part of why upgrades exist.

As for the rumors. I really suspect that there's some hyperbole going on. Especially by Avid who has a serious reason to want to make Apple look less than great. But in the end making Jobs et al look like jerks might not be enough to stop sales if the update is a good or great one

I doubt it Charli, Avid has really stepped up their game at the 'prosumer' level over the last two or three years, I think they have as much right as anyone to feel secure right now.

Also keep in mind that while Avid, Canon and others will have booths at NAB Apple will be sitting NAB out again this year so this SuperMeet is the only time they'll have to debut an update to the NAB crowd. I'm sure they wouldn't say they 'needed' all the available time, but seems a pretty critical time for the announcement.

In your headline, I believe that the word you were groping for was "debut". "Debute" isn't even a word. LOL
Just sayin'...

Great. Do I get it free for buying the last, kinda crummy update?

The last Final Cut Pro and Adobe Creative Suites, were very meh, and I wish I had the money instead.

Yes, but unfortunately FCP is a must buy - unlike PhotoShop where it is easy to skip a year (or three.)
