The Hasbro My3D is out, but the AP says stick with 2D for now

The Associated Press has gotten a hands-on look at the Hasbro My3D, the 3D-goggle accessory for the iPhone that the toy company originally announced in November.

The final price of the device is US$35, but as AP points out, it's more of a curiosity rather than a device someone will use for the long run -- much like its predecessors, the stereoscope and the View-Master. After purchasing the My3D, you can download free (for now) apps that can be used with the device. Some of them, such as Sharks, require an iPhone 4, since the My3D takes advantage of the gyroscope. The AP does confirm that the 3D images are side-by-side stereoscopic images, which the reporter says looked a bit pixelated on her iPhone 3GS.

For now, the review suggests to save the $35 and spend it elsewhere. But, if you're really clamoring for a Hasbro My3D, they are a Target exclusive until June.

Or for a more enjoyable magnified view, print out and assemble your own 3D iPhone/iPod Touch viewer from the PDF on file here:

I've included high-res sample 3D photos that take full advantage of a Retina display, if you have one, but will also work on older iPods and iPhones. (They'll work with Will Beaudot's unmagnified business card viewer, but the images will look much smaller.) You'll also find tips for taking 3D photos with any camera. Enjoy!

It is based on a parallel view method, not cross-eyed. You can also make a DIY iPhone-based handheld 3D viewer/stereoscope using a few spare business cards and some tape: http://www.kybervision.com/Blog/files/3D_on_iPhone_Part1.html

Screw them! I'm not paying $35 to use their stupid app. my3D is just a box with mirrors and you look retarded when you wear them.

they lock each app so people who don't need the glasses can't use their apps.

lame.

Um, can't those (like me) that can have precise control over crossing their eyes, use this app and line the images up physically? That's what I'm about to try.

"it's more of a curiosity"

Just like the whole 3D fad.

I picked these up over the weekend, and they're fun to try, but you have to remove the bumper (if you have one) from the phone before inserting it into the unit. Plus, it's difficult to interact with the screen through the finger holes. I found myself having to open the unit frequently. FWIW, I tried the 3D Camera app with the glasses, and it works fine too for producing and viewing photos.
