Plex 1.1 for iOS adds functionality, interface changes
Put simply, Plex version 1.1 is everything that FrontRow should be. For a start, it streams to your iDevice, presents plenty of online media ... you get the idea. The only advantage FrontRow has is price, and at US$4.99 Plex probably won't break the bank.
The latest version includes many new and updated features, like improved subtitle and audio stream selection support, Direct Streaming and Direct Play support.
One interesting addition is TV out and AirPlay support, though the latter is still "experimental," which suggests less-than-optimal performance.
Plex 1.1 also offers much improved live encoding. For example, Plex 1.1 will note what your Apple TV 2 can manage and only convert what needs to be converted, leaving other streams intact.
Plex 1.1 is available from the App Store now for $4.99. Also, grab Plex for Mac to enjoy video, music, pictures and more. Have fun, media buffs!

Negatives reviews are actually helpful, it will discourage people who don't have the patience or can't read or follow instructions from purchasing the product in the first place.
For those complaining about hte indexing you can change when and how often it indexes. You can even have it set to only update after somehting is added. I have been using it on an older macbook and have no problem streaming 720p to my apple tv, ipad or iphone. I LOVE Plex and it has changed how my family watches tv and movies. I can't wait until a linux build comes out so I can run it directly on my Unraid Media server.
April 11 2011 at 10:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had problems with Plex Media Server constantly re-indexing when it was set to update each time a file was changed; changing it to re-index daily fixed that.
(As it happens, there wasn't any control over *when* it would re-index, so I turned automatic re-indexing off and set up launchd to do it at 3am each day. But that's the advanced class :)
Unfortunately, I have to chime in with the negative experiences: just like Michael K. already mentioned above, the Plex Server stole significant performance on my (early 2009) Mac mini by constantly re-indexing its database. Furthermore, the app had awful problems recognising some of the TV shows and movies on my disc, since I didn't adhere to the desired naming conventions. And â oddly â quite a few videos only played badly, constantly stuttering or stopping with Plex, while in FrontRow or even simply the Quicktime Player they ran smoothly.
Plex quickly was deleted again...
Surprised at how many negative experiences are being reported with Plex.
I use it on a Mac Mini with all my media, and connect using Plex on my MBP/iPad. The whole experience is faultless.
I really wanted to like Plex and used it for some time on a Mac mini in use as an HTPC. It has a lot of great features and has several aspects to it that makes it more usable than Front Row/Apple TV in some ways. But eventually, I ditched the whole setup for an Apple TV 2. Plex just doesn't stream videos nearly as smoothly as Apple does and would choke on some videos that Apple doesn't even flinch on. And don't get me started on the bizarre way it handles anamorphic DVD rips. Using an Apple TV 2 does mean sacrificing DTS audio (you have to down-mix to Dolby Digital when ripping) and no support for any soft subtitles other than SRT, but the hassle-free viewing more than makes up for it.

I've been using plexures to control plex instead which works 10x better. While I do love plex, and use it for watching shows on my phone in different rooms, trying to set it up for remote viewing is a pain. For this I use zumocast which is seamless.
They really need to take a leaf out of plexures and zumocast to make this a truly great app.
If you want a really comprehensive remote for Plex on your iOS device, I highly recommend Hippo Remote.

April 11 2011 at 12:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAfter reading your article, I was amazed and decided to give Plex a try. â¬3.99 on the App Store, but hell, for such an amazing thing it'll be worth the expense!
After installing the software and having the Plex media server index my library over night, I woke up this morning, eager to try the new media experience. What should I say, it wasn't that pleasant. Apart from the fact that the Media Server kept indexing my library over and over again (which I found out through Google), I tried to watch some videos on my iPhone only to find out that they either wouldn't load (getting an error message right away) or play find, just without sound. Those same videos that play perfectly on my Macbook! And Vimeo? The app doesn't let me access my account.
So a sour "thanks" goes to the Plex developers from this side of the pond.
Can some one tell me howto set it up to work on 3g
