Prompt from Panic does SSH on iPad and iPhone

Prompt from Panic is probably not an app you'll download just to muck around with and then forget. An SSH client is one of those things you either need and use a fair bit, or not at all.
Described by developer Panic as "a clean, crisp, and cheerful SSH client: it helps you when you need it, and stays out of your way when you don't," early reviewers seem to like it a lot.
Panic says the app is "for system administrators, web developers, movie-style hackers ('Let me just TCP/IP into the UNIX port!'), or any person who needs to connect remotely and type some magic."
It seems reasonably priced at US$4.99. Let us know if you've tried it.

iSSH (http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/issh-ssh-vnc-console/id287765826?mt=8) offers substantially more features for around twice the price, including features that I consider basic⦠and aren't included in Prompt:
⢠Compression.
⢠Execute command other than the default shell. (I often use `screen` on my mobile devices.)
⢠Additional font choices. I'm partial to Inconsolata XL and Monofur.
⢠Some way to configure port forwards. (I.e. run Prompt, connect, switch to Safari, use local port.)
⢠Better performance with large public/private keys. Currently it takes forever to connect on my iPad 2 using 4096- and 8192-bit keys.
⢠Ability to re-name servers as they appear in the list. One of my hosts shows up as amcgregor@chomolungma.topfloor.ca â needless to say it mostly gets cut off.
⢠Ability to organize hosts into containers. I have personal hosts, local hosts, client hosts, and employer related hosts. (I'm an independent contractor, so I have multiple 'employers'.)
⢠Some way to hide the server list in landscape.
I've sent this list to Panic, too.
Oh, another quick note: iSSH is universal, supports X11 (running graphical applications on a server and have them display on your iPhone/iPad), and even supports VNC and has ctrl-key support for external keyboards (by remapping the option key, butâ¦)

Excellent.
I'll stick with the free OpenSSH program on Cydia. You are years behind guys.

issh is still my favorite, but i have hopes that panic will add some more features.
I have Prompt installed on both iPhone and iPad. It's off to a nice start but missing many key features to justify $4.99. Panic promises many new features in updates to come, so I remain bullish, but it badly needs the following features:
- SSH tunneling.
- Alias for each connection.
- Better autocomplete. It just doesn't work very well for me.
- Better copy paste support. It only allows to initiate select all (not select on individual word).
- Better key file support.
- Better icon: frankly, it's one of the ugliest icons I've seen.
I don't know about anyone else (re: icon), but my prompt is a $, not a >. ;)
April 15 2011 at 2:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoes this app feel responsive on the iPhone? Granted I've only used TouchTerm, and it gets the job done, but usually there is a very clear delay between keypresses. It has some kind of non-interactive mode, but then it's kind of like inputting commands into a single-line field with no auto completion. I want the immediate mode, but I want it to feel like every other terminal I use (putty, xterm, Terminal, etc).
April 15 2011 at 10:14 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replya well done app, as expected from Panic Inc. Folks. Looking forward to see more of their creations on iOS. I have several ssh apps on my iPad 1st Gen. and it's really helpful to have a smooth app. I must agree with @Lee that Terminus is a very good app. Both are very close in this battle.
Both of these apps come handy when you're away from the office and your help is requested. no problem, with your iPad 3G you can ssh and help.
In this scenario I don't see much need for a bluetooth keyboard where people are complaining that Terminus is not ok with. But probably some people would argue that is it indeed needed when quick help is needed. To that i'd say well get a MacBook Air and MiFi then :)
Nice apps both 5 stars ( Prompt or Terminus )
Well I use Terminus by Bigsool. Best SSH client on the iPAD.
Has a full qwerty keyboard laid out like a standard keyboard, up down arrows for cycling through previous commands, TAB for auto complete and even has full xterm colour compatibility. Works over wifi or 3g.
I tried heaps of SSH clients and once I found Terminus I stopped looking for others, it's like sitting at a regular terminal.
I'm a heavy SSH user, I've tried TouchTerm and iSSH and whilst they are certainly functional, the big issue with them both is how tricky it is to input the special and complicated sequences of characters you generally have to input into an SSH session. Both apps get around it in different ways, iSSH's configurable popup wheel being a reasonably good compromise.
Prompt has really impressed me out of the gate. Whilst it doesn't have the bells and whistles of its competitors (yet), the very simple, but very effective toolbar just above the regular keyboard, and the autocomplete tool make it much easier to perform general tasks than either of the other apps I've tried. Logging into multiple sessions at once is straight-forward.
It's cheaper too!
Note I've only tried the iPhone version. I can't speak for the iPad.
My experiences pretty much exactly the same as yours. The expanded keyboard on Prompt is much appreciated, though an F-key modifier would be a lot of icing on the cake (I use screen/Byobu exclusively, and the F-key functions would be two key presses compared to Ctrl-A+'s three). iSSH's key management is incredibly useful though, and should be built into SSH itself.
