Countdown to the last few hours before The Cosmonaut stylus launch

If you're an artist and you like to paint with your iPad, then you know how much nicer it can be to use a capacitive stylus rather then your finger. While there are already a number of styluses that work with iOS devices on the market, Studio Neat has decided there's room for one more. The Cosmonaut is differentiating itself by using a wide-grip design inspired by dry-erase markers, which Studio Neat argues is a more appropriate analog for the way we use an iPad than a pen or pencil.

Studio Neat's first big product, the Glif iPhone stand, had a very successful launch thanks to backers on Kickstarter who were willing to fund the manufacturing costs to get the Glif off the ground. The Cosmonaut is being funded the same way. The original goal was to have $50,000 pledged by the end of the Kickstarter campaign, and right now -- with only a few hours to go -- they've raised more then $125,000.

If the Cosmonaut looks like your dream stylus, you should hurry over to Kickstarter and pledge $25 or more to reserve one in the first batch, which they hope to be shipping in June.

The Cosmonaut looks like a pleasure to hold, and I definitely plan on picking one up at some point.

" …rather then your finger".

A simple mistake to make when you're frantically pounding out posts for a tech website, but how about using "rather than" instead?

I prefer something more like a pen, personally. A dry erase marker is too darn thick!

I've tried several styli and have made many of my own as well using dead metal pens or empty art charcoal or crayon barrels. Alupen and Hard Candy are my favs, the former because it is a good fit for my large hands, the latter for the same and for the reverse end ink pen. I always have my Hard Candy pen/stylus in my back pocket. Companies need to put a splat of ferrous metal or magnet in the stylus so it sticks to the iPad2 Smart Cover. The irish equal of KickStarter has one up. I've taped a thin magnet bar on all my styli -- too lazy and uninterested in business to do my own kickstarter.

I've tried to make my own styli, I even picked up a lead holder to try to use that but I could never find foam that felt right.

It looks pretty cool. I would certainly want to try it before buying, since I already bought 3 stylii... Pogo (gave to my sister), Pogo Sketch (better, but used little) and an iFaraday stylus (the best of the bunch with a smooth, responsive capacitive fabric tip).

Yesterday the WACOM stylus (LOVE WACOM tablets!) was announced and now this! Although, I'd prefer a pointier stylus.

Do I have to buy ALL of them just to try?

Yep, sounds like we'll both be buying all of them since there's no other way to try them. I wish the Apple Store carried them but with Steve being anti-stylus I doubt we'll see that anytime soon.

The real one in the video is totally different than the prototype. It looks like a normal touch cap stylus that has a grip on it. The prototype is so misleading.

I'm afraid that's a reflection on my particularly tight budget at the moment rather then my intent to own one.

" I definitely plan on picking one up at some point". How is that for a definite maybe! Looks good. I think I'll get one too. Drawing on my iPad is one of my favorite uses for it.

Oh, I didn't know they made a capacitive stylus. I've always been a big fan of Wacom, I'm going to have to get my hands on one.

That said, I do believe the Cosmonaut is different enough that it might be more to some people's liking.

Thanks for the tip!
