Star Wars Stormtroopers use Mac System 6

The evil Galactic Empire is well-known for cutting corners in its engineering, with gaping chasms scattered seemingly at random throughout the Death Star without a single guardrail in sight. It turns out the Empire's computer systems are also woefully out of date; as designer Matt Chase demonstrates, it seems Imperial Stormtroopers, like TK-421, are still using System 6 on their Macs.
From the contents of TK-421's email inbox, it appears a Stormtrooper's work is never done. Not only is there some mandatory target practice scheduled, Darth Vader keeps sending increasingly frantic messages concerning a pair of missing droids. The final email, pictured above, is a rather ominous message from rebels@rebelalliance.org threatening to blow up the Death Star. Not to worry, TK-421; any attack against the station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they've obtained.
Check out the full graphic of this decidedly old-school Mac desktop here. Note that one or two items in the graphic may be NSFW depending on your locale, especially if your boss is anything like Darth Vader.

"I'll be ready, at my post, sir!"
You really thought it was trivia? The movie was released in 1977; how on earth did you think that a Mac operating system was going to show up seven years before the computer that ran it debuted? Before you start: the other two films were also made before the Macintosh and apple surely would have used something newer for product-placement in the prequels, had it been done at all.
Yup, we might as well head back to the trees now, mankind is devolving anyhow...
The fact I saw this at ~ 7:00 might give explanation to the error, though to be honest, I have better things to mentally file away than release dates for OS's and films, if I had actually sat and thought about this for more than a scant few seconds while getting ready for work I may have been more likely to put two and two together. Though the fact of the matter is it was a quick piece and as such was read in that manner. I still hold to my initial statement, since this is not the first time I've seen TUAW link elsewhere in a humour piece with little to no explanation in the article itself.

It's only by clicking the link that it becomes apparent that it's a graphic designer having a bit of fun. Please don't keep leaving out stuff that's important, not all of your readers will click the link to the original article.

April 26 2011 at 2:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat people thought it might be real because they didn't read the article through or happen to be entirely gullible makes me sad.
