Mac OS X Lion to feature iOS-like 'jiggling' app unistaller

New features of Mac OS X Lion are slowly leaking out after the last Lion Developer Preview was released. The latest find, noticed by AppleiGuide.co.uk, is a built-in uninstaller function, reminiscent of the way you remove apps in iOS.

The Lion app uninstaller works through Launchpad, Mac OS X's app launcher "home screen" layer. When Launchpad is displayed, a user can click and hold the mouse cursor on an app's icon; after a brief pause, all the app icons will begin jiggling. An X will appear in the upper left-hand corner of the icons, and clicking it will cause a dialog pop-up to appear asking the user, "Are you sure you want to delete the application?" Clicking Delete will move the app and any associated files to the Trash. Currently, this uninstall feature only works with apps purchased through the Mac App Store.

New Mac users are commonly confused about how to delete Mac apps. Coming from a PC, they are used to uninstallers and don't realize that one can (usually) simply drag any app to the Trash to delete it. The new uninstall feature in Lion is another sign that Apple wants to take the simplicity of iOS and apply it to the Mac in hopes of making OS X more familiar and intuitive to anyone using a Mac for the first time.

[Thanks, Sam]

Click and hold to uninstall is NOT intuitive on a computer, sorry. There should be a dedicated panel under system preferences.

Let us hope this unistaller feature also removes Caches and .plist files. It's very annoying to search and remove those files manually...

Question for those in the know: does Launchpad only show Mac App Store apps or all the apps in our Application folder? Can we pick and choose what apps are in Launchpad?

I may stick with App Zapper. Just to make sure EVERYTHING is gone.

Wouldn't it be a simple matter of creating an API for uninstallation?

The cottage apps may be better because they search for files that the uninstaller may leave for various reasons.

Which ones do you guys use? I like CleanMyMac. I have heard AppZapper get recommended. CNET recommended AppCleaner, because it was free. Which ones do you recommend?

Uh yeeeaeah, this isn't a new find at all. I tweeted about it like a month ago. I tweet everything new I find in Lion. I tweeted about the wiggle mode when it was first discovered, I tweeted about this uninstaller, I tweeted when they added an iPhone-style popup that literally looked like a giant (white) iPhone delete confirmation with a notice at the bottom that they were awaiting the final design, and I tweeted again (and even predicted) that the final design for the uninstaller would be in this latest build. Pictures were included every time.

Ok, so this is the last bit of evidence I need to conclude that Apple is releasing an OSX tablet in September. MacPad Pro we come :)

I hope this deletes preference files too. Otherwise, might as well continue using AppDelete.

This will be awesome, if they can get it to work with all applications, regardless of the installation method.

max os x does have a confusing array of installing methods

(drag and drop, installer, drag and launch to install, app store)

and there's a cottage industry of clean up / app removal sw.

I think with the launchpad, which by far is my favourite apple app launch system to date (though I thoroughly prefer quicksilver) The problem is that launchpad itself is not very clear in what's its doing - from what i can tell it's creating a database of aliases to apps in the applications folder. If i want to delete an alias from the launchpad and not the applications folder?

It's actually using the Spotlight index to find all apps on your system. I've logged in and back out and found apps I got through Safari and placed on my desktop in Launchpad. You can't remove an app from Launchpad without removing it from your system. Really, that doesn't even make sense.
