New downloads window coming to Safari in Lion

A few days ago it was discovered that Apple is building in a new feature to Safari called Reading List. The feature works like Instapaper and allows users to save web pages for later viewing. Now Italian Mac site Melamorsicata.it has discovered another tweak set for Safari v. 5.1 in Lion -- a revision of the downloads window.

As you can see in the image above, Safari now sports a downloads button next to the Google search field (this button's location is presumably changeable, as are all Safari toolbar buttons). When you have an active download in progress, the button will show a blue progress bar, ala the progress bar found on app icons when you are downloading and installing them on an iOS device.

Clicking on the downloads button will bring up a new pop-up menu that displays all current and past downloads. This isn't an earth shattering feature, but it will make it easier for novice users who aren't familiar with calling up the downloads window to find it.

Forgive me if I'm being stupid, but what's the little arrow button above the downloads button for? I don't remember seeing it before. Does it out Safari in full screen mode?

Big DEAL..

TODAY, Safari 5 allows you to add a Download Button beside the Google search field.

Just click VIEW -- CUSTOMIZE TOOLBAR. Then drag the icon to the spot you want.

Lion has ONE small improvement. You see a progress bar in the icon.

ANd Lion has ONE small setback. The Download Window is NOW a semitransparent window. Yuck!! Lion is looking uglier every day.

It's still a window. Now there's a popover that does the same thing. It's better than having a downloads window pop up while you're in full screen mode.

And the button doesn't appear if there's no downloads in the queue.

Looks a little rough around the edges in this beta (i.e. the "Canc" button), but I bet it'll be a pleasure to use.

YES YES YES. Finally a downloads window that doesn't get in the way. Been waiting forever for a browser to do something like this.

It's all a matter of taste. I do a lot of downloading (I teach online) and I need a lot more info at a glance than "some number of things are coming and they are partway done." As long as there's a way to keep it as a separate window, I'll be happy.

Brian, if you move to FF you can use Download Status Bar (I wish safari had something like this....)

This is a welcome change. I use Spaces regularly, and I quite often can't find my downloads window which is very annoying!
