Juicies: A colorful Kickstarter project with the Earth in mind
Kickstarter has been a wonderful way for entrepreneurs to get the money they need to fund a project, and we've seen our share of successful -- that is, fully funded -- projects here at TUAW as well as some that have been flops.
A few weeks ago on Earth Day, we received notice of a rather plain product with a different twist. Hawaii-based designer Laurens Laudowicz wasn't happy with the poor quality of some third-party iPhone and iPad charge/sync cables, and he found himself using a pen to mark cables to figure out which were usable with his iPad and which were not.The result? Laurens started obsessing about cables, and decided to create something different. His Juicies cables all work with the higher wattage iPad, they're made of sustainable materials, and they come in ten different colors instead of the usual white or black. Want red, green, orange, or blue cables? You've got 'em, and four more colorful options in addition to black and white.
The project was fully-funded in just three days on Kickstarter. The funding period ends on May 23, and Laurens is hoping to use any extra funding that may accrue for some other ideas he has up his sleeve.Share

Don't want to rain on your parade Laurens but these are already available in Japan & we sometimes sell them ourselves in Asia. Quality is good (we know the cable business)
My 2 cents worth is that you will find it difficult to sustain a business around colour cables for long but I applaud your efforts in trying.
It's definitely worth pointing out again as the article only touched on it briefly, especially for the people whining about pricing, which isnât the retail price btw, but the funding suggestion: These cables, not only compatible, certified, and cool with color, are being made sustainably. I'm a backer of this project on Kickstarter, and have met Laurens. He's a great guy, with a great idea, and he's going to be very successful with this. I'm very excited and proud to be supporting this project.

After all, if consumers start equating product cost with actual value obtained who will back my kickstarter project to bring a double headed toilet plunger to market (msrp $99.00)?

But there's no call to slam this guy or his potential customers. Personally, having been bitten more than once by lousy 3rd-party cables that didn't hold up, and by cables that didn't "quite" fit into our iPhones here with cases on them, coupled with these being made with recycled products (do you people REALLY think there is an endless supply of landfill space????), I have no problem with the price.

Absolutely no mention of if it will work with a bumpered iPhone 4 or iPad still in a case?

May 08 2011 at 12:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo... this guy used a pen to mark which iPad cables worked and which ones didn't. Why wouldn't he just throw the faulty ones in the trash?
May 07 2011 at 6:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've seen some inventive and wonderfully creative ideas on Kickstarter. This is not one of them.
May 07 2011 at 4:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhey....i see what you mean as far as "creative" factor...BUT keep in mind that somehow somewhere somebody has to come up with it first AND it's my first Kickstarter project, but it sure won't be my last. I encourage everyone to try it out. Just the process itself gets creative Juicie(s) flowing ;-)
May 07 2011 at 10:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi'm sorry because normally i find many kickstarter projects worth funding, but $20 for one 3rd party cable? Apple gets $39 for the cable and the 10watt A/C adapter and that's probably two times what it should cost were it not in an Apple box.
For $20 and not original Apple equipment those contacts better be made of 18k gold and the plug housing should be coated in sapphire crystal. Anything less and its grossly overpriced.
Apple supporters often get labeled as fanbois and "having drank the white koolaide" but if they start buying non-Apple aftermarket accessories for made-by-Apple prices they'll get another label: stupid.
I'd be cautious to see if they're as high quality as the Apple ones.
Most non Apple ones will fail after a few months, or sooner if you pull them wrong etc.
