Duke Nukem Forever digital manual refers to Apple's App Store

Stick with us on this one: An industrious Touch Arcade forum goer did a little poking around the Steam page for the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever release (the long, long, loooong-awaited title is finally, supposedly, coming out in June of this year). On that page is a link to the game's manual for the digital release, and in that manual, there's some legal boilerplate lifted straight from Apple's "App Store Additional License Terms."

So there's a few potential things happening there. First up, this could simply mean there's a Mac version of the game on the way to the Mac App Store, though if that was the case, odds are that the game would be released on Steam for Mac as well, and it's not currently listed as a Steam Play title.

Or, as Touch Arcade speculates, there could be a version of Duke Nukem Forever coming to iOS. That's an interesting rumor -- last I heard, Duke Nukem Forever was using a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 2.5, but of course, Gearbox (the company that has taken over the game to finally finish it), has extensive experience with Unreal Engine 3, an engine we've already seen running successfully on the iPhone. It seems a little much to hope for a full iOS port, but when (if?) Duke finally returns to video gaming, he may arrive on iOS in some form as well.

PC/Mac it doesn't matter.. its coming to Onlive and it'll launch on that service the same day its released elsewhere.. pre-order Duke on the Onlive service and they'll give you either a microconsole or a playpass for a game of your choice.

Considering the Onlive client runs on a mac, it really doesn't matter at all if this game comes to OSX, it'll be on Onlive, and thats where I'll play it.

I'm surprised people even care about this game anymore.

There is precedent for this, Borderlands is a Gearbox title available on Steam as a PC only game and the game is also available on the Mac App Store.

I can easily imagine the same situation happening for DNF.

Borderlands PC is on Steam but doesn't use Steamworks for its multiplayer or anything. It uses Gamespy which was replacable with Gameranger on the Mac. It's a different situation. The difference being Bordrelands only uses Steam for distribution but Duke Nukem Forever uses it for multiplayer, community features, achievements, updates, etc.

Or what is most likely the case, this is just boilerplate language from the publisher 2K Games/Take-Two that they use on ALL of their titles.

The big question is would they integrate Steamworks on the PC version and then turn around and remove it for the Mac version? On the PC Duke Nukem Forever requires Steam and that's why. It's technically possible to remove Steamworks and sell it in the App Store or make a version that doesn't require steam... but I doubt they would do the latter and the former they then would sacrifice Mac to PC multiplayer, as well as the other things Steamworks does. Besides, as everyone knows Steam is available on the Mac.

On the other hand frequent Gearbox porter, Feral has a history of removingreplacing middleware. Like in Borderlands they replaced Gamespy with Gameranger I still think for something as readily available as Steam on Mac Gearbox probably wouldn't want to have it removed. But then again that may rule out Feral unless they don't mind and Feral makes a Mac version minus Steamworks and thus again no PCMac multiplayer. Feral just does not do Steam. Also if it ends up being a porting studio rather than in house it wouldn't be mentioned in the "manual" as it would come monthsyears later.

On the other hand I can't say I totally doubt it's coming to the Mac most 3D Realms originated games have and many Gearbox games as well... but given the Steamworks integration it would require either a first party port, or a porting studio that doesn't mind the whole Steamplay initiative.. and companies like Feral do mind.

Also even if they bring it to iOS there's nothing saying it won't be a stripped down side scrolling version.

With all that said it's still kind of hard to beliee it's coming to ANY platform much less MaciOS. ;)

DNF is required to be on the Mac. It has to do with a deal done a long time ago. After Microsoft sniped Bungie, then a Mac developer, several top games were promised to come to Mac. DNF was among them.

What are you talking about? Duke Nukem was never a Bungie title and Gearbox, who has picked up the development of DNF, isn't owned by Microsoft.

The relevant section in the manual states specifically "iPhone and iPod Touch",
but I somehow doubt it's coming out on iOS or even OS X...

I think it's more likely there will be some promotional material, or tie-in minigame or something that's coming out on iOS, but not the full game (or even a slimmed-down port).

The other alternative is some lazy Gearbox dev copied/pasted part of the terms of service, and forgot to remove references to the App Store.
