Sparrow announces new features at TechCrunch Disrupt

Update 6:45 PM EST: Version 1.2 of Sparrow is now available in the Mac App Store. Full list of what's new is here.

Moments ago, Dom Leca of Sparrow took the stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York and announced a few new features for Sparrow -- a powerful and elegant email client. They also gave us a few details on the financials for the company.

Starting with a team of 4, the company raised $250,000 and as of today have made $500,000 in revenue. Not bad!

New features for Sparrow include some Tumblr integration [Coming soon, Ed.], but most interesting to me is the Facebook integration. If you are using your @facebook email, you will be able to access profile images in Sparrow using Facebook Connect. Further, emails from Facebook will show the profile pic for that contact. Very nice.

Sparrow promises some future Twitter and LinkedIn integration. Clearly, Sparrow isn't just a Gmail client, it is becoming a powerful messaging and context platform in itself.

A Sparrow update should be available tonight or tomorrow on the Mac App Store, Leca said. Check our Facebook page tomorrow for some free copies of Sparrow courtesy of AppSumo.

Update: Dom didn't mention it onstage, but told me on Monday that the new Sparrow introduces a Unified Inbox as well as some features detailed on this TechCrunch post. Hurray!

Update 2: Corrected a mistake regarding @facebook emails. It does NOT support this, but allows you to use Facebook Connect instead. Sorry for the error. Also, Tumblr support is "coming soon."

I wish they would add a rules function to sort my incoming mail into folders... Other than that, I really like this app. Don't really want a bunch of social media bloat.

It's still crap at e-mail. Why the hell are they focusing on Facebook integration before they correct fundamental bugs and add simple functionality? I still can't search my Sparrow inbox with Spotlight, for $#@% sake, but I can access Facebook with it? Bizarre product and bizarre philosophy. This was meant to be the successor to Letters.app, which was meant to be a focus on making a great e-mail client. This is nowhere close to meeting that vision. Still jokeware.

Nice. I just wish it did e-mail. You know, for those of use with more than 7 new messages (from their website product photo).

They're going to have to innovate pretty quickly or Mac Mail (in Lion) will walk ALL over them.

is that not what they are doing? and all Mail 5 has (that i know of is) conversations view; I imagine there will be more tricks under the hood, but it seems as though Sparrow is justifying the expense, and will continue to.

Ugh. Why can't anyone just stick to their core product. Adding instant bloat is stupid. I'm all about a unified inbox though..

Yeah. Tumblr? Who uses that? What good does that do? I can't think of why I'd want my email to go to my blog. And why Tumblr? Why not wordpress?

And I'd much rather have some sort of support for MobileMe's Notes? Or integrated Google Docs support? Or even the basic clicking on a date and having iCal come up and create an entry. Sparrow doesn't do that. Or smart email like if I put an attachment to an email, and it's 10 megs in size, or 100megs, it realizes that it might be better to offload it to say DropBox or MobileMe iDisk.....and Sparrow would be smart enough to do that, upload the file, and create a link in the email without me doing it. Or even if I drag a URL to an email, have Sparrow make a link to it and ask me if I want to include a PDF of the page.

I can sorta see what they are doing, and everyone is doing it. Making all email, tweets, IMs, Facebook, etc accessible from one program. I just think there are more core features that need to be added like the stuff I mentioned above.
