Apple education deal rumored for WWDC
BGR broke out a rumor today suggesting Apple may unveil a new Back-To-School promotion at WWDC. As part of this sale, everyone who buys a new Mac with their educational discount would receive a free iPod touch or $200 off the cost of an iPad.
For the past several years, Apple has kicked off a back-to-school promotion in late May or early June. It would not be surprising to see this discount extended to the iPad this year.
The WWDC part of this rumor, though, has us scratching our heads. In previous years, these promotions were announced on Apple's website. There was no event, not even a press release. Yes, they occurred around the time of WWDC, but they were not announced at WWDC. Why would this year be any different?

The other issue is people are just buying iPads and not buying Laptops or Desktop computers. Look on this very blog for that data.
I think thats one reason the sale hasnt started yet- how many schools are going to have the " you need and iPad for classes this fall" They need to come up with something else- maybe $$ towards decent headphones.
An iPodâwho in the target demographic doesn't already have one or more? They're trying to clear current model iPod inventory and increase sales numbers (remember, you are BUYING an iPod and Apple refunds the purchase price, it's not included in the computer box like Cracker Jacksâ¢). A smarter idea would be "Buy a Mac, get 2 AppleTVs". Same monetary value of $200, but one unit would be to send to off to school with your kid if he/she is headed to college, one is for home for the 'rents. MobileMe (or iCloud) photo galleries to keep up with each other, etc. And I'm sure some folks would do some iTunes movie rentals.

The "buy a Mac, get an free" back-to-school promotion usually runs from late May through mid-September, roughly. They've had it for the past several years, I don't know why they'd stop now.

It is not a 10% discount on hardware It is a dollar discount that is more like 5% and only on computers and iPods. Nothing on iPhones or iPads.
There is a 10% discount on select software but it is very limited. No family packs, no pro apps, no upgrades, no snow leopard
Its not going to include the iPad. iPod Touches get refreshed in September, and the EDU deal is a way to move old merchandise. Apple doesn't need help getting rid of iPads.
May 28 2011 at 12:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot to mention that they can't handle demand as is. Plus dealing with folks trying to come back to get their iPad etc later so they can get the one they want or exchange the one they got for the deal. Chaos extreme
That said, they might start this the same week but the deal won't be connected to WWDC. People are just making bad assumptions
I think they need to promote this deal more this time around. MS is offering a free Xbox 360 for students with purchase of a PC. It's the same $200 either way, but MS is really promoting this thing with big flashy network TV ads. Considering that the 360 is already 6 years old (besides the new case and the removable of the LEDs for the rrod), a brand new iPod touch is a much better deal. The only problem is that people don't know about this deal. If they buy from the Apple Store, they make sure you know about this deal and the EDU discounts. Unfortunately, most students just buy from Best Buy, at full price and completely clueless about the iPod and printer deals.

We're poised to by the wife a new iMac (and official bring her over to the dark side) and have just been waiting to see what the deal would be. Since I was planning on getting the iPad 2 (and almost bought one last weekend when we were iMac browsing at the local Apple store) this makes the next shopping trip a no-brainer -- new iMac and new iPad. What could be better!?
