1Password 3.6 adds Lion support, drops Leopard/PowerPCs (Updated)

1Password 3.6 is out now with a plethora of changes. Most notably, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is now supported while OS X 10.5 Leopard and PowerPC support has been dropped.

David Chartier writes that the number of 1Password customers who are using Leopard or a PowerPC-based Mac has fallen into the single digits. Dropping Leopard/PowerPC support enables developers to shrink 1Password's size by 12 percent.

Chartier told TUAW that AgileBits looked into adopting Snow Leopard features such as Grand Central Dispatch in January 2010. The Snow Leopard features make it easier to do things under the hood, having a big impact on user-end experience, but essentially weren't possible with Leopard.

AgileBits co-founders made the final decision to pull Leopard support after consulting with the rest of the team, including support personnel and developers. Chartier said that less than six percent of 1Password users are on Leopard.

Leopard users can download an older version of 1Password as needed.

Lion support, on the other hand, means that 1Password will be compatible with the OS from the day it's available in the Mac App Store. The Safari extension also received an update to match it to the Chrome extension that debuted in November.

Other changes to 1Password include:

  • Adds support for Firefox 5 while dropping support for Firefox 3.
  • Adds support for Fluid
  • Adds support for the upcoming Dropbox 1.2
  • Changed the About page to reflect the company's name change to AgileBits.
  • Removed Camino extension
  • Can use Amazon CloudFront as an alternate download location
  • A number of other bug fixes and changes

1Password 3.6 for Mac requires OS X 10.6 or higher. A single-user license is US$39.99 and a family license is $59.99. Upgrade pricing varies, depending on the original date of purchase. A free trial is available.

Update: Chartier clarified that the redesigned Safari extension will only be seen in Lion. Snow Leopard users retain the current extension.

Update 2: Chartier let us know that the redesigned Safari extension will be available to Snow Leopard users once Apple releases Safari 5.1, which is currently in developer preview.

I'm still using an original PPC G5 as my main machine without any problems short of support dropping all over the place. It runs like a champ still, but I keep wondering when I'll need to upgrade just due to dropped support. I can't even sync my Apple calendar any more. 1Password is my all-time favorite app and has been for a long time. Please don't let whatever version I'm left with become as wonky as the Windows version I came to rely on for my work computer. PowerPC support group anyone?

Hi Nazco. I believe we will look at issuing critical fixes to 1Password 3.5.x to help users who still need it. You can of course still email us for support as well.

I hope this helps!

1Password is awesome. Brilliant integration with Dropbox (which I assume soon will become icloud support). That is what is great about Dropbox, no syncing, and I'm glad the 1Password developers were sharp enough to realize this advantage. Of course, Apple's finally come around to see it too. (poor dropbox) It's the close as an app comes to perfection that I can think of.

Wow, single figures for ppc users! Can we form an elite club? :-) As well as my modern machine, I still use my 12" powerbook running leopard. And I love it. So to 1Password people - please allow backwards compatibility for syncing.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! We know many users are still using PPC and Leopard and this is why we kept Leopard support for as long as we did. With all the wonderful goodies Apple has baked into 10.6 and 10.7, however, it has become increasingly hard to ignore them. I want to use the new features! :)

With that said, I don't think "dropping support" properly describes what we are doing. Users are free to continue using 1Password 3.5.9 and their data will continue to sync with 1Password 3.6. And of course, if anyone asks us questions about their Leopard setup we'll be happy to help, so in that way it is still "supported". Indeed, we are still answering questions from Tiger users when they contact us and we'll continue to do so.

Going forward, however, new releases of 1Password will focus on Lion and Snow Leopard so we are able to use all the new toys Apple has blessed us with.

I hope that better explains where we are coming from.

Cheers!

Hi Dave!

I'm a happy 1Password user on iOS - truly a great app.

I was also interested to purchase 1Password for my 2 Macs, but I couldn’t find it on the Mac App Store.

I seriously believe you’d sell A LOT more of your app, if it was on the Mac App Store and with a little more reasonable price (Pixelmator, Aperture are good examples of great pricing). Say, $29,99 and with all the advantages of App Store - would result in an instant purchase, at least form me.

Anyway, thanks for the great work!
Cheers,
Sandis

Apps on Mac app Store automatically gets family license of some sort, since apps can be installed on any number of Macs sharing same Apple ID. So I wonder what the pricing will be.

I wonder if what was really meant was the PERCENTAGE of Leopard and/or PPC users is in the single digits? I find it far easier to believe that it's less than 9% of their user base rather than only 9 or less users, at least two of which read TUAW, apparently! :)

Either that, or there's a huge flaw in their stats collecting.

Yes, it certainly was meant to be a percentage :)

Leopard is about 5 percent at the moment. To put this into perspective, Lion is already over 7% and it hasn't even been released yet.

By the way, if someone from AgileBits is reading this: if you run too hard, you'll end up overtaking your customers. That is NO way to earn repeat sales, let me tell you right now! I can not understand the model where such an important app/service would be the one limiting the usage pool. You guys are DEAD wrong in your thinking.

Thanks for the feedback tabaloon. Believe me, we spent a long, long time thinking about the changes that Apple's new features would allow us to make and how many customers they would affect. Snow Leopard was released in August 2009, and we didn't really start thinking about the major under-the-hood changes in 1Password 3.6 until January 2010, almost five months later.

We then spent the next year listening to our customers and watching our Leopard users upgrade to Snow Leopard until we got to where we are today: less than six percent of our users are on Leopard, and already three percent of those customers are on Lion, which hasn't even shipped yet!

Releasing software updates and incorporating new features and stability is always a difficult balance. But we spent a long time thinking about these changes, listening to our customers, watching our stats, and carefully planning our roadmap.

I hope this helps.

Yeah, I still own a PowerPC G5, but it's basically just a storage device at this point. :-(

Rob, I'm a Leopard user with 1Password, too. Wow dude, WE are the elite, only 9 of us on THE PLANET! Oh boy, wait until I tell everyone! I think I'll contact AgileBits to get some sort of certificate about this WIN!
