Apple unveils new 3 TB Time Capsule model (Updated)

Just as we were digesting the Final Cut Pro X arrival, word comes that Apple is also unveiling a new Time Capsule model. The 3TB model appears in the image header of the Time Capsule page on Apple's website, but full product details are not yet available. We'll keep you updated as new information is released.
The part numbers and FCC IDs of the new units leaked last night, so it was reasonable to expect the actual devices pretty quickly. TUAW first reported that an AirPort/Time Capsule refresh was in the works back on June 1, when retail supplies of the wireless routers began to dry up.
Update: The new 3 TB Time Capsule will be priced at $499 and is available now on Apple's web site. The 2TB is $299. Looks like the product got a capacity bump, but that rumored tie-in to iCloud did not materialize.

It'd be nice if Apple gave you a little more information about the type of drive that's in these units. "Server-grade hard disk" doesn't really say much. I would like to know what manufacturer and what speed.

June 21 2011 at 9:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyReally wanted to see an A5 based unit. With Thunderbolt.
Apple is taking too long to push this forward. The current model is to specific and limited. Add iOS with the ability to get apps that compliment iPads and Apple TV and it becomes interesting. Add Thunderbolt and the network issues go away. Especially with the MacBook Air and iPad using flash storage keeping a pottion of Time Capsule storage for media would be the "killerApp"
Otherwise, Time Machine works best with a dedicated USB drive you can buy for $50 on sale.. Just plug in every few days and save $449!
Looks to me like all I need to do is add a 3 TB drive to my current TC and I've saved $325. Doesn't seem to be any other changes except the drive size. Did I miss something?
June 21 2011 at 12:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had a time capsule and depended on it for backing up my Macbook Pro. When that crashed, the hard drive was replaced, and the Time Capsule refused to recognize the "new" computer and restore anything. Time Capsule and Time Machine are crap ware in my opinion. I'm glad I had Mozy doing reliable and useful backups--restored everything.
June 21 2011 at 11:50 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTM is convenient but GoodSync or Carbon Copy Cloner are quicker and more reliable. TM gives you the choice of selecting a specific day to restore from, but otherwise, it's slow, always running, and no choice when/how often to back up (tying up nework bandwidth). I put in the same bin as iDisk (another crappy waste).
June 21 2011 at 12:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOne more thing, that useless sparsebundle that TM creates. With GoodSync or CCC, I can select a specific file right out of the backup to resore. TM requires TM to get a file. And as Kevin states above, you need specific hardware or else, sorry Charlie . . .

June 24 2011 at 9:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm confused. The site isn't clicking through. There's nothing about it on Apple's site. What is this?
June 21 2011 at 11:02 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust because their is no mention of an iCloud tie-in, does not mean it doesn't exist. With iCloud not officially launching until the Fall (with iOS5), it could be that Apple are updating the hardware and will then announce this feature, or release as a firmware update, nearer the release of iCloud.
This means they will have more time to get stuff sorted, and not keep people waiting for a feature
I'm getting a 404 when i click buy now at http://store.apple.com/us/go/timecapsule
"The page you're looking for can't be found.
Did you try searching? Enter a keyword(s) in the search field above. Or, try one of the links below."
Er... not for me. I see the paragraph text "Choose from 2TB and 3TB models." but on the far right I see:
Select your product
( ) 1 TB
( ) 2 TB
er.. Apple fail?
And when I go poking around apple.com and select "Get Time Capsule" it directs me to store.apple.com/us/browse/home/null :) hah *I CAN'T GET ONE!!*
Now I'm sad... :(
I went to see the prices and clicked the buy now and got an error page. Hopefully it's being pushed out soon. I really need a new time capsule since my 2 year old, 1TB, one is full.
