TUAW's Daily App: Tiny Tower

I actually played Tiny Tower for the first time back at GDC this year -- the guys at NimbleBit kindly showed me an early version of it while they were in the middle of designing the game. The title itself is now out and finished on the App Store, and after having played it for about a week already (thanks to a press preview), I can say it's an amazing title that's made even better by the fact that it's completely free to install and play.
It's very much like the old SimTower game in that you create and run a tower filled with little characters called Bitizens. You can build residential floors to move Bitizens into, and then you can put them to work on other floors that fill out certain categories, like retail floors and services and recreation areas. You can assign three Bitizens to work on a certain floor, and then you pay money to stock goods in those stores and sell them to various visitors.
In addition to the time-based management side of the game, there are a few games to play, like getting Bitizens to the right floor in a working elevator or playing find-the-Bitizen. These games are more integrated into the overall game than, say, the pond was in NimbleBit's Pocket Frogs, but I'm still a little disappointed that they don't have too much of an effect. You can make a few bucks at a time, and there are VIPs that show up every once in a while, but the floors you deliver people to don't seem to really have a direct effect.
Nevertheless, it's fun building up your tower, and while the push notifications (if you keep them on) threaten to get annoying after a while, the amount of detail and care put into the art and strategy is excellent. There are even little extras, like a "BitBook" social network page and a fun screen to compare your friends' towers via Game Center. Tiny Tower is yet another great title from NimbleBit. It's a freemium download (and like Pocket Frogs, you can buy "convenience currency" with an in-app purchase, but I haven't needed it yet) that's available right now.

Top Tips by GameCentre ID Neopod
#1 To help with the Find-Waldo mini-mission, change the appearance of each Bitizen to make them completely individual to one another, saves lots of time
#2 Any Bitizen that has a Sad face, give them glasses or something so you know quickly and visually which people to swap job positions (It is not always good to delete them instantly as they may have more than 1 score of 8 or above for an upcoming store)
#3 Similar to above, I give each Happy Dream Job Bitizen a hat to wear so quickly and visually I know not to move them
#4 Add me to your skyline; ID above
#5 Get rid of beards, that's just a personal tip, especially on the female Bitizens :)
#6 When deciding which business to build next, look at the Dream Jobs and see which category has the most
#7 keep things to the golden rule 3AP/5SP; thats 3 APartments to 5 ShoPs (15AP=15SP); I build SP/AP/SP/AP/SP/SP/AP/SP
#8 Don't be afraid of booting out someone who has less than a score of 4 in all categories
Wait for next update, sounds like it could have lots of potential
Fantastic! Thanks for the heads up. My son and I were recently reminiscing Sim Tower. This looks fun!

June 24 2011 at 1:40 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyI was stupid enough to buy $4.99 worth and it didn't work. Spent another .99 and it still didn't.When I tried to fix it, it erased my monwy and I am back at zero. I will not spend any more on this. This App is not ready for prime time unless you are a developer and can mess with it. I am trying to get my money back and get rid of this App. Haven't been able to so far. I bought it after reading about it on this site. Should have waited.
June 24 2011 at 4:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere's no price to purchase the app, hence, its free. You dont need to buy bux to play the game, hence, its free still.

February 29 2012 at 8:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate downThe original creator of SimTower (before it was called SimTower) has re-created SimTower and it is available in the AppStore (iPhone and iPad versions) as "Yoot Tower". I loved SimTower and was very happy to see Yoot Tower come to the AppStore.
