Postbox 2.5 out with new Mac theme, 64-bit mode

Postbox is a favored alternate email client among the TUAW staff and version 2.5 was just released with a number of updates.

This includes Postbox now running in 64-bit mode along with a new theme, interface and icon set that does much to make it look similar to the built-in Mail app, but retain Postbox's distinct style. Double-row vertical thread view is now supported along with a streamlined message view. In addition to all of this is a major price reduction. When Postbox 2 was released, it was US$39.95. It's now $19.95 with upgrades from Postbox 1 being $14.95.

Postbox 2.5 requires OS X 10.6 and higher and is currently available through Postbox's site. The 2.5 version will be available via the Mac App Store soon.

I paid $40 for Postbox 1 and have never regretted it. It wasn't a quantum leap over Thunderbird, but it was an improvement, and anything that improves my day-to-day management of multiple e-mail accounts is easily worth that over time. Liked the changes in 2 and love 2.5 so far. No regrets about paying for a product that makes a part of work I hate (answering e-mail) way more tolerable.

Just not worth switching to something (never mind paying for it) when Lion is weeks away.

Pricing aside, lack of Thunderbird extension compatibility kills this one for me. Several of the extensions I use are not, and never have been, compatible with Postbox.

So I was a big Sparrow user after being a big Thunderbird junkie just for the really nice idea of the horizontal layout and simplicity. I saw that this had a 64 bit version, downloaded the trial, saw how pretty this looked all of a sudden, and insta-switched back.

Thanks.

I was a big fan of postbox until I found that pretty much everything I liked about it was Thunderbird 3 features. When they started charging an obscene amount of money they lost me. $40 for a Thunderbird clone with a new themeset is just not worth it.

The new price is a lot better, unfortunately by now doesn't look like an app I would like to use anymore.

Was $39.95 - now $19.95. And god forbid anyone releases an App that does something another App does ;)

Actually, joking aside, Postbox 2.5 is what Postbox 1 should have been. Two-line vertical view is a definite improvement. And a bonus is that you can use one licence to download both Windows and Mac versions (take note 1Password).

Of course Lion Mail may blow it away (it's a great improvement over Snow Leopard Mail), and in my opinion it's better then pared down Mail program like Sparrow (which seem to get all the press).

$40 for an app that does what another app already does?
