OS X Lion rumors: Do we want to believe 'em or not?

I don't know if you've noticed a trend, but at TUAW we've been trying to downplay a lot of the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion / MacBook Air refresh rumors that have been flooding a lot of other sites lately. The occasional one squeaks in, but for the most part we're trying to stay away from the daily "IT'S COMING TOMORROW!!!!" posts that have been so common over the last few weeks on some other Apple sites.

Why? Frankly, it's because we're bored to death by the same rumors that have been coming out day after day after day. Not to say that we're not wondering ourselves about Lion and those new MacBook Airs, but let's face it: is it really necessary to post rumors every day?

That being said, there are some indications that Wednesday may finally be the day that Cupertino blesses us with new hardware and operating system software. We received an anonymous email from an Apple Store employee who told us about new marketing materials (see photo above) that were sent to the store last week in a "Visual Merchandising" container, filled with materials used to market a new notebook computer. MacBook Air? MacBook? Who knows. There are also persistent rumors of Mac mini and Mac Pro updates, which our source didn't see in the marketing bin.

The same source noted that his/her Apple Store was down to "less than two dozen MacBook Airs, with no shipments on the horizon." Yes, we believe that there are new MacBook Airs coming out. As for the exact day? We have no clue. Until or unless a helpful (possibly disgruntled) Apple Store employee sends us a photo of the specs from a new MBA, we're as much in the dark as the rest of the world.

Our compatriots at MacRumors and AppleInsider are venturing that all of the new hardware and OS X Lion are going to arrive at 8:30 AM EDT on Wednesday, July 20. Will it happen? I guess we'll have to wait until Wednesday morning to be sure. MacRumors has reported that Apple Retail Stores are receiving copies of Lion on hard disks that have been sent to the stores for distribution onto the Macs in each store. Fortunately, the wise Arnold Kim at MacRumors is hedging his bets by stating that "This, of course, doesn't guarantee a specific launch date, but brings Apple one step closer to launch."

The TUAW response to all of this? We're preparing for launch, and we'll push the button when we actually see something new. Are we playing it safe? Yes. But we're also trying to avoid the repetition of "It's coming out TOMORROW!!!" rumors that have been bouncing around for the last three weeks.

When Lion and refreshed Macs get here, then we'll let you know. Cheers!

Not to be cliche but IT'S COMING TOMORROW (FYI it's the 20th not 21st)

Thank you for avoiding the nonsensical hype. Every Tuesday in July, it's been the same old story. Honestly, everyone needs to relax. And make certain that they have cloned their hard drive.

After last week, I'm just trying to ignore Lion rumors until it actually comes out. I just check TUAW about twice daily to see if it's been released. Checking different sites multiple times a day is just exhausting. And annoying. I love Apple, but I just wish they would let everyone know what day it will be released. The secrecy gets old. I mean come on, they know exactly when Lion will be released. What do they gain by keeping it a secret until it is actually ready to download? Are they looking to avoid a mad rush on their servers? By quietly activating it on the App Store, people will find out about it and download it gradually?

What they gain? Free advertising with all the hype and constant rumours :p
That and it's just their style.

Thank you guys for not over posting rumors and speculation about Lion coming out everyday. I am excited as anybody, but sick of being disappointed when it doesn't actually happen.

so in an article claiming you don't want to take part in rumors of the launch date, you spend the whole article explaining the rumors. Sounds a bit like you're writing about the rumors. Also, you guys had multiple stories last week about the impending launch based on pure speculation on your part.
It's fine that you're speculating and reporting rumors, but don't fool yourselves into thinking you're acting above it.

i love Apple. What other company could cause this much unrest in the tech world? Not Microsoft. Didn't remember reading any heart-stopping stories about when Windows 7 was gonna be released. And what for, Windows Snap?!

Anyway, I'm feeling pretty confident about tomorrow as well. Last week we merely had rumors and wishful thinking. This week we have marketing materials, signs and posters showing up in stores and news of hard drives being delivered.

If nothing else July is almost over so it's not like we have much longer to wait.

After planning my last week around the July 14th release date, I'm skeptical of being fooled again, but I can't help it. I stopped caring about it for about 4 days, but I'm getting Lion fever again! This had better be right (but this time, with the promo materials being delivered and Apple stores doing updates tonight, I feel more confident about it).

The early-morning time being reported is interesting. Usually I expect them to release things in the mid-morning Cupertino time. I guess it's so the download will be available from the moment the stores open on the east coast. I need to go to bed really early tonight.

I am in the camp that Lion (idk about other stuff) tomorrow (weds, 20th). The reason: I ordered a new Macbook Pro early last week via Apple Business and they said it wouldn't get to me until the 21st which makes sense if Lion is going to be on it. Otherwise, it would have come 3-5 days. Either way, we'll see. Not a big deal. It's just software.

You do realize that by writing an article about how you DIDN'T write that "it'll be released tomorrow" you actually did.

I see what you did there, its pretty funny. Shoulda asked that Apple Store employee when the overnight was scheduled. They used to ask 3-5 employees to work overtime & overnight to refresh graphics.
