Lion will ship on USB drives in August

In the hustle and the bustle today, we failed to note a minor detail in Apple's Lion press announcement, but MacRumors picked it up:

Users who do not have broadband access at home, work or school can download Lion at Apple retail stores and later this August, Lion will be made available on a USB thumb drive through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com) for $69 (US).

So much for the absence of physical media. The option to download at an Apple Store is nice (either bring your Mac, or bring a drive with enough free space to carry Lion home); the USB install media will be equally nice, and very welcome for those supporting multiple machines with touchy ISP connectivity. It's an extra $40, but them's the breaks.

That's not helpful for me - I live four hours one way from nearest apple store. I live in a remote area and am lucky to to have 100 KB/sec at peak. Averages about 65-70. So not sure I can move to Lion as much as I would like to.

I live 35hrs drive one way from the nearest apple store.

I'll either download it or wait and buy the stick.

We could get a friend to download and mail it, might be quicker.

"...made available through the Apple Store (www.apple.com)."

It's a four hour drive to get to www.apple.com? Woah, I didn't even know you could drive there. Are they letting cars on the "information super-highway" now?

Ha, I'm playing. In all seriousness, a lot of people overlook that very important web address in the press release. It's the Online Apple Store. I don't know if it will even be available in physical stores, considering the fact that they've pulled all packaged Apple software from the physical stores.

That $40 for the flash drive better buy either a

1. 32gb flash drive with Lion on it or
2. 8gb flash drive with Lion on it and an Apple Logo

I want to install Lion on a zeroed out (blank) hard drive without having to install (and upgrade) Snow Leopard first. Will this USB drive let me do that?
