Apple may be putting in a bid to buy Hulu
According to Bloomberg, the online video service Hulu is up for sale, and Apple is reportedly considering bidding on it.
Apple certainly has enough cash on hand to buy Hulu (about 35 times over), and if successful in its bid Apple would gain a huge foothold in video media services. Put together with iTunes, an Apple-Hulu deal would be a serious competitor for Netflix.
Other entities interested in buying Hulu include Google, Yahoo, and AT&T (shudder). Microsoft has dropped out of the bidding, and Bloomberg's sources say Amazon is unlikely to bid unless it gets guaranteed access to shows. Several of the media companies associated with Hulu are offering a five-year extension of program rights that includes a two-year exclusive deal, so it's a very lucrative target for all interested. Hulu went up for sale last month, and Yahoo reportedly made a US$2 billion bid for it already.
Whoever buys Hulu, I have just two requests:
- Make the service available to the roughly six billion humans who don't live in the United States.
- Like John Gruber says, get rid of the Flash-centric interface.

Apple has reportedly joined a growing list of companies said to be considering a bid for Hulu.
The iPad maker and iTunes purveyor is in early talks that may lead to an acquisition of the online video service, two unidentified sources told Bloomberg.
Apple could not immediately be reached for comment, and Hulu representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
John Gruber says replace the FLASH Interface? WTF??? lol..... if they want HULU without FLASH or Netflix the only reason for buying HULU would be to eliminate competition and restrict it's user base. Plus..... what exactly would Apple use to replace it with? Quicktime? lol.... Certainly not HTML5, because that won't be final till 2012! haha
John Gruber is a moron! ......HULU would immediately lose that userbase that are now very accustomed the FLASH interface. If Apple something like HULU and iTunes they should just make a service using their buggy Quicktime and force people to download iTunes to use it!
well if apple does buy it you can kiss that flash away haha

I'm just hoping that they aren't doing this to snipe a competitor out of the game.

July 21 2011 at 11:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, it ticks me off. I have Netflix and Hulu Plus and Hulu Plus will have shows that I can't watch on an iPad or on my TV that netflix will stream anytime on any device. The best shows are "computer only" even though I watch most of my Hulu on my iPad. Stupid licensing issues that just hinder the consumer from getting content they are already paying for. Most of the time I give up and watch it on Netflix (the competitor) or just watch another show (something the show makers probably don't want happening to their fan base).

They are not so sneakily forcing you to watch even more commercials now. (example: fast forwarding to where you left off last time now forces you to watch the first commercial, plus two more.) I love Hulu Plus and Netflix as they have allowed me to happily cancel cable. I hope Apple will look at their mountain of cash and take the hit on a subscription service.
