Dragon Dictate 2.5 offers support for Microsoft Word 2011
Nuance has announced Dragon Dictate 2.5, a free upgrade to the company's Mac voice control/input app for version 2.0 customers. The new version dramatically improves mouse and keyboard entry in Microsoft Word 2011, among other features. According to Nuance, Word 2011 is the most commonly used app for Dragon Dictate customers, so it makes sense that the company would put emphasis on adding more dictation functionality for the word processing market leader.
Earlier versions of Dictate would get confused about where the insertion point or document elements were located when users switched between voice and mouse input (except in the company's own Notepad app or in TextEdit, where Dragon supported more complex behaviors). The recommendation against mixing dictation and keyboard/mouse editing has been so ingrained in the product's DNA that Dragon refers to it informally as the Golden Rule. Meanwhile, users of the corresponding Dragon NaturallySpeaking app on the Windows platform had far fewer restrictions.
With 2.5 and Microsoft Word 2011, the Golden Rule is history; users can easily switch between voice and keyboard input at will, or between dictation and command mode within Dictate itself, all without disrupting Dictate's internal model of the document. This lends itself to a far more natural and workflow-friendly way of using Dragon; instead of having to stop and start between dictation and editing phases, just keep on going.
Dragon SVP/general manager Peter Mahoney told TUAW that there's nothing specific to announce about enhanced support for Apple's Pages or other popular Mac productivity apps, but the company is looking at other integrations. "This is the first time that we've done this [on the Mac] for a meaningful application, and there was a lot of new invention in the way we created these integration models," he said. "Some of the approach we used in Word 2011 will benefit the Windows product, too... It's certainly something that we plan to expand to other applications over time."
Version 2.5 adds the ability to dictate without distraction from the mouse and keyboard, and also adds a microphone option in the form of an iOS app -- Dragon Remote Microphone (Free) -- for those situations where you'd rather not be tied to a traditional headset, but where you do share a Wi-Fi network between your computer and your phone.
There are new capabilities for controlling how Dragon Dictate formats text, and new voice commands even allow posting to Facebook and Twitter. Even doing searches on Google, Bing, Yahoo! or with Spotlight on the Mac can be accomplished with a voice command. The microphone can now be set to automatically "sleep" after a preset amount of time so that it won't recognize speech until you specifically wake it.
For new users, a digital download Dragon Dictate 2.5 for Mac is available for $179.99 through the Nuance website; owners of the Windows NaturallySpeaking product can cross-grade for $99. Check out the slideshow below for a demonstration of some of the Word commands that are available in the upgrade.

"What if I have Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the PC, but I want to switch to Dragon Dictate for Mac, or vice-versa? Do you have any special offers?
a. We do not have any cross-platform offers at this time."

July 26 2011 at 4:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhen attempting to purchase my 2.5 upgrade - I had to review my upgrade availability which informed me my 1.X had been upgraded already (I used it to purchase the 2.0, for a mere $100.00) as for my 2.0 version and Scribe 2.0 - they were listed as not eligible for the 2.5 upgrade… Surprisingly, Nuance had zero information on this issue but was more than happy to sell me 2.5 at 199.00. The site seems way to cluttered. Perhaps its their massive push towards developing their PC following (I own Dictate 1 & 2 but can't upgrade while they are offering cross-platform updates to PC user! I'm glad they are doing well but when you leave loyal customers in the dust in order to land a bigger fish, they need to consider who is going to be their foundation when they don't land the big subcontracting gig? They could always call 3DFXs and see how they faired after Nvidia slaughtered them - wait, I forgot, they don't own a phone anymore…. As a successful business owner I always try to get involved with companies that are making products to better our lives. I adored what Nuance had finally put in to play with the development of workable dictation products. Doing my part I purchased (nearly $600.00 worth of software within a year) and vocally supported all versions of their, OS appropriate, products throughout their post Mac-dictate move till, well, about twenty minutes ago. Now I see my only options as begging the sale department or spending $9.95 for the "new" tech-support extensions (nice that it destroyed all the previous help logs that many people had stored on-site). Also, I've never encountered a limited number of PAID upgrades per unit? Heck, Microsoft lets you keep on upgrading until massive changes occur and it is no longer an upgrade issue. It's not like Nuances upgrades are free! Don't even ask about Macs(all free upgrades on OS's)… Sorry to go on about this, but I was truly disappointed in the evolution of a company that seemed so dedicated to offering customers friendly accessible products to another pay-to-play clone. All that said, I still hope I end up finding a one click button that will fix the whole issue… Thanks

I have no solution yet but after more digging I found more information on a how to make a free call in order to address my issues. Hopefully, I will soon have my up-grade, which I read was free for the 2.0 owners , with an optional $29 hard copy charge - remember you must have a USB microphone, such as the one provided in all new version bundles. If I get it, than please enjoy a good laugh over my dramatic essay to the people. I will, also, provide information on torubleshooting the upgrade and details on best purchase methods (hopefully I used to get my 2.5). If no 2.5, I will tell you if I stumble upon new small dictation software company run by hungry yet savvy group of techies with hearts of gold. Then, I won't care if I spend twice as much as the 2.5 - service/quality trumps costs in most cases.

July 25 2011 at 4:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am surprised at the high cost of a minor upgrade, the last upgrade was only $49. Especially since they do not support Lion with Dragon Dictate 2.0. So Lion upgrades are strong-armed into paying another $99.
