Browse vacation spots with Kayak Explore for Mac

Travel site Kayak.com has released its first OS X app, Kayak Explore. The app works as a sort of travel guidebook that helps users make up their minds about what destinations they should explore on their next trip.

When you launch the app, you're presented with a map and five photos, each of which represents a different vacation destination. Beneath the photo, you'll find a price for the trip, including flights and hotel. At the bottom of the screen is a slider with back and next arrows, which cycles through the list of destinations. Adjusting the slider to the left or right allows you to select a price range.

The filter bar allows you to customize the auto-generated vacation destinations. You can select from categories such as romantic, shopping, urban, historic, and more; change your departure airport; adjust the number of travelers and narrow your trip to a specific month. Clicking on any of the destinations brings up a details windows that shows flight prices from different airlines and details about the hotel, such as maps, photos, reviews and rates. If you want to book any of the flights or destinations, click the Book Now button, and it will take you to the provider's website where you can complete your purchase.

I'm a fan of Kayak.com, and I think their Kayak HD app is one of the best travel apps for the iPad. However, the Kayak Explore Mac app seems almost pointless. It's more of a kiosk you'd expect to see at an airport or Kayak's website.

While the effort is appreciated, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come in the Mac App Store: apps that are little more than branding materials for companies, serve little purpose or provide little more than shallow benefits for users.

Kayak Explore is a free download from the Mac App Store.

"one of the best travel apps for the iPad"?? How can TUAW write such garbage?? This must rank as one of the worse apps ever released...One would not even release this as a Beta. Please read the reviews of actual users in the App Store to get an idea of what the real user experience is. Have you been paid by Kayak? that is the only explanation for such review...

This app seems mostly designed for the semi-impulse traveler who likes to shop package deals to see where in the world they might be able to go for four days at a discount. Sometimes I'm that person -- I once spent 4 days in London for $800 books, flight and hotel, and it was delightful -- and I can see the value of an app that helps me browse such offers . The web sites that sell tickets for more focused travelers are not really designed for this sort of thing, and you have to keep entering details over and over again and clicking to new windows to check out the hotel, etc. They're not conducive to idle exploration.

However, this app is kinda broken (it keeps returning "Whoops, can't connect to the site" error messages) and not that customizable. You can't, for example, specify countries or regions, like Europe.

Similar experience to LauraM with regards to the app not connecting and error messages. Also, it seems it can only suggest a handful (4 or 5) locations when selecting a departing airport and there seems to be no logic or reasoning behind the suggestions with the exception of (possibly) price.

That said, the interface is great and I hope that they add more destinations/details to it soon! The concept of visually seeing where an airport can fly to and the cost is great. I just wish it worked reliably!
