Mac sales are booming in Asia

In past earnings conference calls, Apple has emphasized the important role of Asia in its future growth. And it's not just iPhones that are flying off the shelves. Mac shipments are also booming in the Asia-Pacific region. According to Needham analyst Charlie Wolf, Mac shipments rose 67.6% in the region and this explosive growth drove worldwide shipments to a staggering 55.2% year-over-year increase. Mac sales have been on the rise over the last six quarters, a trend that is only increasing and not slowing down.
Apple products are popular in Asia and its middle class, with discretionary income, is growing. If you need more proof, just look at all the fake Apple stores that are cropping up across China. They are trying to capitalize on Apple's success, too

The headline should read Mac sales are booming in Asia despite Apples limited investment in the market. Hong Kong doesn't have an Apple store yet (it is under construction), the iTunes store is really limited missing many things you can get in other markets, AppleTV is not available here, and iPhone and iPad releases are way behind the primary markets (US, UK, Australia, etc) with very limited stock i.e. the iPad has only just become a regular stock item in the Apple on-line store.
Given the size of the market, number of early adopters and amount of disposable income Apples behaviour is perplexing.
Totally agree on Apple quality. Comes with a ton of good software, too. Customer support is legendary. But people often were not raised to recognize the value of a quality item over a longer lifespan. Like buying a $99 mattress that collapses in a year and gives no good sleep. Don't skimp when it's something important.

Just did it yesterday. Why would I buy a i5 based computer with moderate accessories from Dell or HP for 1100, when I can buy an iMac with similar accessories and less fuss for 1150? XYZ Droid tablet for 399-599, or iPad2 for 499? And believe it or not, spec'cing out an ultra-portable actually ends up cheaper at Apple! Really the only advantage I can give PC these days is for custom-build or enterprise/business.
The whole ecosystem is en vogue right now, plus it works really, really well, plus the stuff is extremely minimal and very aesthetically pleasing (both from a hardware and software standpoint). It's all win for most home users.
You are dead on. Looking at the sheer quality of Apple hardware compared to it's counterparts, I can't imagine buying anything else. My last MacBook took me 3 years without a single issue w/hardware or software. My last 3 laptops from Dell took me for a year long ride each... ridiculous. Let's not talk about desktops-- I can't even boot my media center pc used solely for music and movies... My Mac mini has been on for the last 2 years with minimal reboot serving up the goods in its place just fine. Sure, you could buy a go-kart because it has wheels and an engine, but i would much rather a real automobile to get to work everyday... there is a huge difference in quality and build when it comes to Apple-- not to mention the fact you can actually talk to an Apple rep in your own country by walking in to the store and getting your problem fixed real time. Dell, HP, Microsoft, et al... I'm looking directly at you...

But you forget to mention some of the exclusive features on a Mac notebook like the MagSafe adapter, glass trackpads, unibody construction. These easily attribute to the extra $50-150 increase from a competing manufacturer.
