This iPad Smart Cover-inspired iPhone keyboard looks like a winner

The idea behind this is so brilliant that it's a wonder it wasn't developed sooner: Jing Yang of eico Motion Lab in China has created the Smart Keyboard, what he bills as the world's thinnest keyboard for the iPhone.

It's based on the concept behind the iPad 2 Smart Covers. Roll the keyboard onto the screen when you want to use it, then roll it back off when you're done. Like the Smart Cover, it attaches to the bottom of an iPhone with magnets and can be used as a stand.

This hasn't been developed beyond a concept video yet, but check it out below to see the potential. This would be a fantastic Kickstarter project. You can follow any project updates via SmartKeyboard on Twitter.

"Jing Yang of eico Motion Lab in China has created the Smart Keyboard"

Typo. Looks like you meant to say "Jing Yang of eico Motion Lab in China has created AN ANIMATION OF the Smart Keyboard"

Making a video about something is not impressive, except to animation students. Actually making the device pictured would be more interesting, if it were not utterly impossible.

I like how he even includes dozens of incredibly tiny LED lights inside the keyboard too, which will apparently be powered by fairy dust. This is the most ludicrous device I've ever seen. I highly doubt this could be built within the next 10 years at ANY price, let alone under $1000, or the $40 that the market would bear.

Also I am pretty sure no part of the iPhone housing is ferromagnetic, so the magnetic attachment is also a fantasy.

At 0:36 into the video when the cover rolls back behind the iPhone: "for Stand or Shooting Handle".
Am I the only one who wonders what this means?

That means a "grib for the camera"

Would be great to see it alive.

I use a blackberry as my primary phone just for the keyboard, and I am complete apple fanboy, but I type a lot, I have to write sometimes long emails from the mobile phone, and I can have the same performance using an iPhone.

The blackberry keyboard only have 1 layout, and have all the things need it to work. This it's a concept, but it's a very nice idea.

Hope to see a iPhone with an option of keyboard soon. I really like to use an iPhone and trow my blackberry away.

'I have to write sometimes long emails' ' blackberry keyboard only have 1 layout'

Me Tarzan you Jane ? You sound like a retard.

You would think that if you write long emails you would be able to sting a sentence together but, no, you can't. I don't believe that any keyboard can help you.

"sting" a sentence together?

Ah, irony.

Why not just make a concept video of someone typing using merely the power of their mind?

That would be even thinner.

It can be a follow up to the concept video of the iPhone that also works as a hover board.

Thats just plain stupid. what about number keys and different layouts and characters?

What about the dirt and grime that gets on it when folded back? It gets transferred to the screen, potentially scratching it.

The biggest failure? Who would buy it?

Looks like they will have spent more time on the video for this than it will ever get in production.

reminds me of the Sony Ericsson p800 phones from yesteryear... albeit without the qwerty but it was a similar concept, it actually had little nubs that poked the touchscreen when you used the flip cover.

Yeah that's fine and dandy, until you want to use punctuation or accented characters or switch to another language or use emoji. Then what?

Yeah Lakiolen, I'm with you. A possible very slight gain in typing efficiency in exchange for not being able to see all the punctuation. I'm sure the keyboard can provide a layout of a lot of punctuation, but it's limited in what it can display, where as a software keyboard is unlimited as long as it keeps changing to your need. And how would you know if you are numbers mode, punctuation mode or something else? Apple doesn't have an interface API for displaying that except on the software keyboard, which you are covering up!

It covers the home button which is not a problem with large keyboards.

Exactly how does it stay on the back of the phone when not in use?

How do they plan on keeping it from getting damaged in a pocket or from extreme use?

How exactly is this news? Megan you've been taken in by a clever video and that's it. How about some analysis please?

How do you know accented characters won't be accessible? Press and hold? And only people 12 and under use emoji. Looks good to me.

How are you gonna use press and hold? Keep in mind that the keyboard is part of the OS. You can't customize the keyboard software at all! Neither the way they show (sliding the keyboard down slightly) nor by, for example, moving the press-and-hold balloon up above the keyboard so you could see it.

And no, in Japan everyone uses Emoji all the time. It's why nobody was buying the iPhone before they added that feature in a software update.
