The iPod touch was introduced today, way back in 2007

The iPod touch was introduced on September 5, 2007. In the video below, it's almost painful to watch all of the iPhone features we now take for granted, particularly the iPod interface. I got a chuckle when I heard the crowd applaud for Wi-Fi, something we really take for granted these days with iCloud on the horizon. But the iPod touch was finally the non-contract iDevice which would introduce thousands of people to the iPhone OS. It lacked a speaker, and was a now-chunky 8mm in thickness and came in 8 GB and 16 GB configurations at its introduction.

The videos below are from "The Beat Goes On" event, and besides the touch hardware, Steve Jobs also made a point to add to the touch two iPhone OS apps (remember this was before the advent of the App Store): Safari and YouTube. This, plus the addition of Wi-Fi built-in with an easy method for joining networks, made the touch very much like a pocket computer. Of course, now we regard it more an iOS device than an iPod.

In fact, I've been told by retail employees who worked during the iPhone OS 2.0 update, which introduced apps but required a computer to sync with, that numerous customers came in complaining that their iPod touch was their main computer. This will of course be remedied for current hardware capable of running iOS 5, which will introduce over-the-air updates. For many people, simple browsing, email and access to YouTube was worth the $299 for the diminutive device.

I still have a first-generation iPod touch and use it. How about you?

this month I bought a 4g 8GB touch. This is my first iOS device ever and I love it. Basically it is the iphone4 without the phone and a much more elegant designing case around. I wanted this because the touch before had no camera, not even on the frontside. And I got it 20 euro reduced at a total of 209 Euro. Ever since I have it I download apps and games and produce iMovies with it. Surfing with it is a joy, as is emailing or youtube, but where it really shines is HD content and games. The "Retina" display is outstanding sharp and brilliant. Having a VOIP app installed, you can even have phoning options over wifi.. so the desire for having an iPhone over an iPod touch is really small. They share the exact same tech , Apple A4 processor at 1GhZ is inside mine as I was told. It is lightning fast in 3D games like the sims3 , I can tell you.

Got mine Jan 2008 and it is still going strong as the only iOS device I've owned. Battery holds a decent charge; but that's not a problem anyway as I carry a large-capacity external. It's still supported by the majority of less graphically-intensive game releases on the App Store, and it is just a really wonderful product. I probably won't upgrade until the iPhone 6 or 7 !

I still have the 1G iPod Touch which I brought on Nov 30, 2007.

Still has the same battery juice, though runs slow at time but is a treat to carry around for Mobile music :)

Still have mine. It was my best gadget yet when it arrived at on Christmas Day 2007. We still use it but now permanently housed in a speaker dock in our daughters room for music playing as the battery long since stopped holding a useable charge.

got a second generation unit and been using it in place of my laptop like 95% of the time, unfortunately fried the thing while charging the other day (never ever use cheap chargers) so now thinking of getting the latest one. Or is the rumor about the next generation of the ipod touch having a built in data connection is true? if thats the case then I'll wait for that as right now I'm depending to my mifi to connect to the net.

I’ve still got my first generation iPod and I love it! Of course, it’s not much more than a music device for me now, apps kill it. I have no complaints or serious issues though. A few scratches and nicks, but nothing major! Only waiting to replace it with the iPhone 5.

Same feeling here. Waiting to replace mine with the iPhone 5 as well to take advantage of Apps that need iOS4 and above!

I still have my 1st gen iPod touch. Use it all the time to listen to podcasts during commute hours and while I'm at the gym. Still a good device even after 3+ years of use. The lock button doesn't work anymore though.

On my second touch after I cracked the screen on #1. I get withdrawal symptoms if it isn't within reach.

Tip: Install the app "All of Wikipedia", then grit your teeth and download the 4Gb data dump. Congratulations, you can now put on that "Don't Panic" lockscreen wallpaper, for you have your very own Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Or the part of the galaxy within our reach, anyway. :-)

My first iOS device was a 1st gen iPod touch that I got to use from the school district I worked for at the time. We had gotten some for free as a bonus with our massive order of MacBooks for the district that year. I was the first teacher to be given one by our technology director because he thought I could find an educational use for it. At the time I was using a Samsung feature phone, 6 months later I bought an iPhone 3G, my first smartphone. I haven't looked back.
