Apple begins shipping Thunderbolt displays

The Thunderbolt-compatible displays Apple announced back in July have reportedly started shipping out to stores and retailers. MacRumors reported that the displays shipped this week, and should hit shelves very soon. Electronista has heard that shipping to customers will start up on September 15, which is a little later than the original "60 days" we were promised. But late is better than never, right?

Honestly, these things are bee-youtiful, offering a 27-inch LED display, complete with an edge-to-edge design (hot!), a Facetime camera built in, a 2.1 speaker system, USB and Ethernet ports and of course a Thunderbolt port. If you'd like to get one, it'll set you back a cool $999 -- not cheap, but far from expensive for what you're getting.

The MacBook Air above is, of course, not included.

Sigh - Amazon's still in "we'll let you know when we might have a street date" mode.

Why does it cost so much? I can get a much nicer and bigger tv for that price and just output to it.

A TV with a smaller resolution, no camera/mic, no port replicators, and no macbook charging cable, sure. Compared to other monitors with the same resolution, it's a reasonable price.

Apple deserves to be mocked eternally for the horrid design of the Macbook Air. The power is on one side, but the monitor cable/thunderbold is on the other. This means you have to put the cables on both sides of the computer. Can you say retarded? How did they not fix this in the refresh they just did??

what is a thunderbold? ;-)

I agree on the placement however. I've never been a fan of the Airs

I think it came to the internal specs and if it were all on one side of the other someone would always complain, "why are all the ports on the left?" "why are all the ports on the right" being in the center is a nice, medium placement for everyone and was probably (as stated) a requirement with no choice due to the way it's built.

just a thought...pure speculation backed by common sense and a bit of previous Air knowledge. I had one, hated it, sold it. MBP'd It!
